Job Summary
Provide person‑centred, evidence‑based counselling interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health challenges. Focus on improving emotional wellbeing and building resilience through individual and group sessions, and collaborate with the Clinical Lead and Service Lead to design innovative, client‑focused care pathways.
Pay & Contract
Salary: £25,000 to £29,000 a year (pro‑rate part time). Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time, Part‑time, Flexible
Responsibilities
* Deliver therapeutic interventions to Children Looked After (CLA) independently, including travel and lone working when required.
* Conduct professional initial assessments and provide counselling to CLA.
* Support professional consultations and develop alternatives to one‑to‑one therapy such as group work.
* Maintain accurate, confidential case notes and records using the designated case management systems.
* Build links with other agencies, signpost to local resources, and facilitate onward referrals.
* Manage risk positively and respond proactively to child protection and safeguarding concerns.
* Communicate and engage with children and young people in a way that is appropriate to individual needs, ensuring they feel listened to, respected, and empowered.
* Act as a team player within a supportive clinical team, contributing to service innovation and co‑production.
Qualifications
* 24 months post‑qualification experience in counselling/psychotherapy.
* Professional registration with a recognised national body (e.g., BACP, UKCP, HCPC). Knowledge of CYP development and family dynamics.
Experience
* Experience working within a multi‑disciplinary team environment.
* Ability to manage a caseload and assess and manage risks.
* Knowledge of child protection and safeguarding protocols.
* Experience with supervision and continuous professional development.
* Up‑to‑date knowledge of evidence‑based practice for CYP emotional wellbeing and support for parents/carers.
* Desirable: Experience in the CLA sector, quality improvement, pathway development, delivering training to CYP, parents/carers, and professionals.
Professional Standards
* Abide by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or equivalent.
* Maintain active membership with a national professional organisation; pursue accreditation/registration as required; complete annual CPD.
* Covered by ABL liability insurance for malpractice.
* Attend supervision at a minimum of 1.5 hours per FTE per month with an appropriately qualified professional.
* Comply with GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018, and all ABL policies relating to information governance, health & safety, and safeguarding.
* Adhere to ABL’s smoke‑free policy.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
Post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A submission will be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
