Job Overview We are recruiting a Consultant Community Paediatrician for our Community Child Health service in Newham, East London. The role focuses on safeguarding and working closely with Children in Care, supporting multidisciplinary teams and ensuring high quality clinical care.
Responsibilities
Run consultant clinics, including Children in Care clinics, and handle related administrative work.
Triage and supervise patients as Consultant of the Day.
Participate in clinical discussions and meetings.
Support and advise colleagues in the clinical assessment and care of children and young people.
Teaching and Training
Lead training and supervision for new trainees and doctors joining the department.
Contribute to departmental teaching and teaching of medical students.
Work with local specialist and designated looked‑after‑children professionals to agree and promote training needs and priorities.
Management and Leadership
Conduct audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives.
Ensure clinical governance.
Provide management supervision.
Safeguarding & Children in Care
Work closely with named doctors to support all activities necessary to meet responsibilities for looked‑after children and young people.
Advise local police, children’s social care and other statutory and voluntary agencies on health matters related to looked‑after children and safeguarding.
Liaise closely with other specialist services within ELFT.
Support and advise the board on safeguarding issues.
Contribute to the planning and strategic organisation of provider services for looked‑after children and child protection.
Qualifications Essential
MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Current full UK GMC registration and Licence to Practise.
MRCPCH or equivalent.
Entry on GMC specialist register.
At least 2 years higher specialist training or equivalent clinical experience in Community Paediatrics.
At least 2 years general professional training in Paediatrics.
Extensive experience in multidisciplinary child development teams.
Competence in managing common paediatric problems and Level 3 safeguarding competences.
Supervision of child protection medical assessments.
Valid BLS training.
Clinical supervision experience for trainees and/or specialty doctors.
Record of audit or quality improvement projects.
Good written communication skills.
Desirable
Postgraduate degree in related child health or medical speciality (MSc, MD, PhD).
DCH, MBA or other diploma or higher degree in a relevant field.
SPIN or Diploma in Paediatric Neurodisability.
Specialist experience in paediatric neurology or related community child health practice.
Experience in child mental health, obstetrics, public health or general practice.
Training in autism diagnostic assessment.
Experience managing children with complex neurological and developmental problems.
Experience as educational supervisor, clinical leadership in a multidisciplinary team.
Completed recognised medical management course.
Experience in NHS complaint handling, critical incident reporting, staff appraisal, risk management.
Experience in published research projects.
Experience with co‑production and collaboration with service users.
Quality improvement training.
Evidence of championing diversity, equity and inclusion.
