Overview
This post is for a Locum Obstetric and Gynaecologist Consultant. The role will have extensive responsibilities in obstetrics, acute and general gynaecology. The post complements 5 Consultants at West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven and 7 Consultants at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, and will involve working at both sites with the primary base at West Cumberland Hospital. The Consultant may undertake some clinical duties at Cumberland Infirmary.
Main duties
The successful candidate will provide general obstetric and acute gynaecology services, including on call and risk management, and will be expected to have broad experience in labour ward management. SPA time will be used for clinical management duties, clinical audit, research, clinical governance, teaching, training and reflective practice.
We are a forward looking department in a large improvement programme. Our CQC rating is GOOD and we aspire to be outstanding. Nationally we are ahead in digital programmes with access to antenatal case records on patients’ smartphones.
The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is part of the Women and Children\'s Collaborative which also includes countywide Paediatric services. Paediatric services are provided by a consultant-led service at Cumberland Infirmary (7 WTE) and West Cumberland Hospital (5 WTE).
Both West Cumberland Hospital and Cumberland Infirmary have dedicated facilities including Out-Patient Suite with an Early Pregnancy Unit, Colposcopy and Rapid Access Clinics, Delivery Suite, Maternity Ward, Day Surgery Unit, Maternity Day Assessment Unit and MPU.

Education and Qualifications
* Full Registration with the General Medical Council
* Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists or equivalent
Desirable
* Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree
* Postgraduate qualifications (e.g., Master\'s, diplomas)
* Management training
* Instructor status in APLS/ALS
* Entry into the specialist register (or within six months of entry)
Experience and Knowledge
Essential
* High level of clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Operative Obstetrics & Gynaecology
* Ability to perform major gynaecological procedures (abdominal and vaginal hysterectomy)
* Interest in obstetrics, labour ward management, risk management, and management of medical problems in pregnancy
* Postnatal pelvic health management
* Knowledge in advanced antenatal care and maternal medicine
* Excellent communication with patients, colleagues and staff
* Ability to take independent clinical responsibility
* Experience in uro-dynamics and OPH
Desirable
* Experience in emergency gynaecology and laparoscopy
* Ultrasound accreditation/training
* Membership of relevant professional societies
* Involvement in risk management and protocol development
* Intermediate ultrasound in obstetrics
