Summer Placement – Sustainability Engineer
Join Buro Happold as a Sustainability Engineer student on an 8‑week paid summer placement (Summer 2026). You will work in one of our Bath, London, Leeds, Manchester or Edinburgh offices.
What is Sustainability Engineering?
Sustainability engineering is broad but typically split into Building Performance Engineering, Environmental Design Engineering and Sustainability Consulting. This includes energy modelling, micro‑climate analysis, embodied‑carbon assessment, BREEAM/LEED/BCF certifications, post‑occupancy evaluation, social value, health & wellbeing and circular‑economy solutions.
What sort of projects would I work on?
The team is involved in some of the UK’s highest‑rated sustainable buildings – e.g. Apple HQ at Battersea Power Station and London College of Fashion, Stratford – and works with C40 Cities on research, tools and pilot programmes around air quality, climate resilience and deep‑retrofit benefits.
What will I do?
* Advise clients, engineers, architects and urban planners on sustainable measures
* Undertake research to develop design solutions, such as:
o Climate change resilience
o Health, wellbeing and productivity
o Embodied‑carbon strategies to reduce whole‑life impacts
o Circular‑economy strategies within building design
* Undertake assessments to help clients achieve sustainable certifications
* Prepare reports on sustainability, whole‑life carbon and circular economy to accompany planning applications
What degree will I be studying?
Typical programmes include Architectural Engineering, Sustainable Development, International Development/Urban Planning, Environmental Design/Science/Management, Building Services/MEP Engineering, Civil Engineering or Water Engineering.
