The Engineering Operations & Maintenance Lead (EOML) holds primary accountability for providing strategic leadership and management to all the Engineering maintenance teams. The role holds ultimate responsibility for maintaining a safe and stable operation whilst ensuring compliance and regulatory standards are met across the entire asset base and airport campus. Responsible for the financial decisions and contract management with an OPEX budget of circa £20m. The EOML will also support the development of the asset replacement strategy, ensuring that the asset base and infrastructure are maintained efficiently and effectively, producing accurate asset life cycle data to help prioritize asset replacement.
What you'll be doing
1. Accountable for the maintenance and reliability strategy for the engineering asset base.
2. Direct line management responsibility for 4 reports and a team of approximately 250 FTE.
3. Responsible for setting strategic objectives for Engineering Operations and Maintenance, aligning them for delivery through the SEM Team.
4. Ensure Gatwick remains compliant with regulations such as ORR Shuttle Safety Authorisation, Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, Legionella, Asbestos, Aerodrome Licensing, Fire Safety Order 2005, Electricity at Work regulations, Gas Safe, F-Gas, Pressure Systems Safety Regs, and Vehicle safety standards.
5. Ensure Engineering passes all Core Service Standards related to the asset base, including Baggage, Shuttle, Airfield, and LEPC.
6. Manage contractual scope, tender negotiations, and contractor selection for all Engineering maintenance contracts.
7. Manage relationships with trade unions concerning Engineering-related consultations, negotiations, and issues.
8. Demonstrate strong leadership and influencing skills to communicate effectively with all levels of the business and external stakeholders, including government and regulatory bodies.
9. Communicate and influence large groups with differing views to adopt standardized approaches.
10. Possess proven knowledge and understanding of working with unions and employee relations engagement.
11. Lead proactively to promote a strong health and safety culture, ensuring processes are fit for purpose to protect employees and contractors.
12. Drive change within the business to embed new visions and processes successfully.
13. Balance commercial considerations—value for cost, process, and people.
14. Negotiate complex service contracts and meet departmental budget targets.
15. Maintain a strong understanding of Airport Operations and Engineering's role within it, both during normal operations and disruption events.
16. Ensure compliance with regulations affecting the Engineering Asset base, including electrical, confined spaces, hot works, etc.
17. Have a good working knowledge of Safe Systems of Work and statutory compliance.
18. Experience working with Trade Unions to consult, negotiate, and resolve complex issues.
