Overview
We are inviting applications for a full‑time Locum Consultant in Cardiology at our 660‑bedded acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. The appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England).
The successful candidate will join a friendly team of fourteen existing consultants and support the department’s vision of a comprehensive Cardiology service. Sub‑specialty interest in heart failure and cardiac MRI is welcomed, as is enthusiasm for teaching, audit and research.
Main duties of the job
Job responsibilities
* Offer dedicated specialist Heart Failure clinics and, where necessary, coordinate with General Cardiology or other specialist clinics.
* Provide a high‑quality outpatient service, including patient administration.
* Work with other Consultants to deliver specialty Cardiology advice and support to patients within the Trust.
* Develop the service with a specialty interest in heart failure and cardiac MRI.
Other tasks
* Attend and actively participate in weekly multidisciplinary meetings and governance meetings.
* Contribute to the management and development of the specialty and introduction of new services.
* Assist with the educational programme, including departmental meetings and teaching.
* Contribute to the general medicine educational programme.
* Undertake high‑quality medical audit projects and collect data to meet national quality standards.
* Implement audit and research findings in clinical practice.
* Comply with Continuing Professional Development and revalidation requirements set by the Royal College of Physicians.
Weekly work commitments will adhere to European directives on working hours and the Royal College of Physicians recommendations. Senior cardiologists will act as mentors for the new consultant.
The job plan will outline duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the fixed‑term period. It will cover clinical work, teaching, research, education, and managerial responsibilities, and provide a clear schedule of commitments and required support.
The appointment will be subject to full Occupational Health clearance and Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check prior to commencement.
Person Specification
Qualification
* Medical Degree
* MRCP
* MD or equivalent higher degree, or evidence of relevant research experience (desirable)
Registration
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice (essential)
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR portfolio pathway (desirable)
Clinical Experience
* Excellent all‑round DGH work experience.
* Thorough and broad training and experience in Cardiology and General Medicine.
* Ability to take full independent responsibility for clinical work and delivery of service without direct supervision.
Clinical Effectiveness
* Understanding of clinical governance and ongoing CPD.
* Experience of guideline appraisal.
* Participation in relevant local audits.
* Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
* Participation in relevant national audits (desirable)
Teaching
* Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
* Participation in Teaching the Teachers or similar course (desirable)
Personnel Skills
* Capacity to work cooperatively in a democratic team environment.
* Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills.
* Leadership skills.
Clinical Governance
* Broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
Personnel Circumstances
* Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for on‑call emergencies.
* Satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
* Satisfactory DBS clearance.
