Overview

Job Overview The District Nurse Specialist Practitioner Student role offers a structured pathway toward advanced specialist practice in community nursing. Working alongside experienced District Nurse assessors and supervisors, the student will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care in patients’ homes and community settings. The role involves the development of advanced clinical assessment skills, autonomous decision-making, and effective case management of individuals with complex health needs. Emphasis is placed on leadership, evidence-based practice, and collaborative working across multidisciplinary teams to support the health and wellbeing of diverse populations.


Main duties

The post holder is responsible for successfully completing the academic and clinical components required for registration as a Community Specialist Practitioner with the NMC. This involves active participation in university study days and practice placements, working closely with a practice assessor and supervisor to develop the necessary clinical skills and professional competencies. The role includes applying theoretical knowledge to real world practice, gaining an understanding of relevant national and local healthcare policies, and beginning to develop leadership and caseload management skills. The student is also expected to adhere to university regulations regarding academic conduct and to follow the policies and professional standards of their employing organisation.

The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as an NMC registered Community Specialist Practitioner on a defined pathway. These are summarised below:

* To fulfil the requirements of the Community Specialist Practitioner programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations.
* To work with the practice assessor and practice supervisor to develop the skills and competencies to achieve NMC Registration Standards for Community Specialist Practice.
* With the support of the practice assessor to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation.
* To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging National, Regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they relate to chosen pathway.
* To develop/build on skills of caseload and team leadership and management.
* To work within University Regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct.
* To work within employing organisation policies as they relate to the relevant clinical setting.
* To work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

* UK NMC Registered (part 1)
* Ability to drive, access to a car
* Extensive post registration community experience
* Evidence of wide range of clinical experience
* Ability to work unsupervised
* Ability to work under pressure
* Ability to prioritise a changing workload
* Ability to study in your own time/self-directed learning

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of other professional training
