About the service: Based on the island of Whalsay, this service provides high-quality, person-centred support for older people in a ten-bed care home and day care service at the heart of the community. In addition, a Support at Home Service provides support to people in their own homes. The team delivers 24-hour care and support. As Shetland does not have any nursing homes or hospices, the care provided can be complex and multifaceted. Strong partnership working with the NHS, local council, and third sector organisations is central to ensuring the highest standards of care and meeting the needs of the island community. The service is managed by a Senior Team Leader under the guidance of an Executive Manager. Across Shetland, there are nine Team Leaders responsible for managing older people’s care services. They meet at least once a month to share knowledge, support one another, and ensure consistent, high-quality care across the isles. The team combines a wealth of experience with fresh perspectives, creating a supportive environment that values collaboration, professional growth, and the highest standards of care. As part of the care team, you’ll be joining a community that values looking after one another just as much as it values its fishing heritage. Your role will be meaningful, respected, and supported—not just by colleagues, but by neighbours who quickly become friends. When the working day ends, Whalsay offers a unique balance of tradition and modern living: Walk along dramatic coastlines and watch fishing boats return to harbour.
