Overview
The apprenticeship in Dental Nursing is an 18-month government-funded course - City & Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Nursing. The job entails assisting the dentist, sterilising equipment, reception and any other ad-hoc duties as may be required. Provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to practice clinicians. The role will also require working in other areas of the practice, such as:
* Reception
* Dealing with patient queries
* Answering the phone
* Taking payments and booking appointments
Participants work towards a Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard and may need to achieve Functional Skills in English and maths, GCSE in English and Maths if required.
Responsibilities (selected)
* Provide chairside support to the operator during treatment and prepare records, images, equipment and materials for clinical assessment.
* Process and manage dental radiographs and images; undertake chair-side tasks as required.
* Prepare and maintain the clinical environment including instruments and equipment; ensure decontamination and infection control procedures are up to date according to current guidelines.
* Record accurate and contemporaneous patient history and dental charting; maintain complete and accurate patient records in line with legal requirements and best practice.
* Identify and explain risks within the clinical environment and manage them safely; identify changes in the patient\'s oral health status and take appropriate action.
* Obtain valid consent, record health information, and manage patient safety with care, compassion and respect.
* Support patients with anxiety, communicate effectively, and adopt a patient-centred approach within the dental team.
* Contribute to relevant special investigations and diagnostic procedures; undertake orthodontic assessment where appropriate.
* Provide comprehensive, personalised preventive advice and motivation to maintain oral health.
Qualifications and Skills
* Level 3 Dental Nurse Apprenticeship Standard (City & Guilds) and an End Point Assessment (EPA).
* Functional Skills: English and Maths (if needed); English and Maths GCSEs may be required (e.g., English grade 4/C and Maths grade 4/C).
* English, maths, communication skills; attention to detail; organisation; customer care; problem solving; team working; patience; non-judgemental approach.
Benefits and Schedule
Salary: £15,704 to £25,396.80, depending on age. Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 8:00pm; Saturday 8:00am - 1:00pm on a rota. 40 hours per week. Start date and duration: 40 hours per week, Duration 1 year 6 months. Training includes on-the-job practice, online study and weekly teaching sessions. Includes End Point Assessment (EPA) and progression to General Dental Council (GDC) registration as a qualified dental nurse.
