Opportunity
We have a fantastic opportunity for permanent Lead Structures Engineer/Senior Structures Engineer at all levels to join our award‑winning and growing Consulting Structures Team in the South West. The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. We co‑locate with our client at offices in Cardiff, Exeter and Bristol, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.
Role
The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. You will design viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges and manage strengthening, refurbishment and safety improvement projects across the National Highways network.
Responsibilities
* Lead a team and produce technically sound engineering solutions.
* Take ownership of projects from quotation to handover.
* Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation to meet quality, cost and programme criteria.
* Oversee the actions of junior members of staff and take responsibility for their work.
* Contribute to the professional development of junior staff and act as a Delegated Engineer.
* Liaise with clients and suppliers at peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
* Manage a locally based technical team and oversee delivery of their workload.
* Contribute to bid preparation and general work‑winning functions.
* Drive effective Health and Safety practices within the team.
Qualifications
* Developed experience and expertise in structural engineering gained in an engineer role or equivalent.
* Ability to produce or oversee technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
* Ownership of preparation and checking of deliverables to a reasonable standard.
* Strong working knowledge of relevant software and analytical tools (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
* Good commercial awareness.
* Understanding of CDM and risk assessment, with experience managing and communicating hazards and risks on projects.
* Understanding of interface management and ensuring alignment with other disciplines.
* Incorporated or Chartered status with the ICE or IStructE (or equivalent professional licence) is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject, or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
