Personal Assistant – Support for a Young Person with Additional Needs
We are seeking a caring, reliable, and patient Personal Assistant to support our son, a young person with additional needs. He is non-verbal, can use some basic sign communication, and requires assistance to interact with people outside of the immediate family. This role involves supporting our son to access the community, ensuring safety at all times, and encouraging participation in enjoyable activities.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide constant supervision due to vulnerability and lack of danger awareness, particularly around road traffic.
* Collect from the family home and transport to and from activities in the local community.
* Accompany and assist with activities such as:
o Mini golf and bowling (e.g. at Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park)
o Cinema visits
o Shopping trips
o Walks and outdoor activities
* Encourage participation in activities and promote enjoyment.
* Support communication with others, including unfamiliar people, using simple signing and supportive approaches.
* Ensure the young person’s safety during working hours.
Qualifications
* Patient, calm, and understanding nature.
* Full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle with business use on insurance.
* Good communication skills and willingness to use or learn basic signing.
* Reliable with good time‑keeping and keeping the family updated with activities and any concerns.
* Able to maintain confidentiality and be aware of privacy.
* Ability to develop and maintain a supportive relationship providing stability and encouragement when needed.
* Experience working with children or individuals with additional needs.
Benefits and Conditions
Wages will be paid in arrears on a 4‑weekly basis once a valid National Insurance number has been provided. You must be eligible to work in the UK and your employer will conduct document checks prior to commencement.
You will receive the appropriate annual leave entitlement as well as other statutory entitlements, details of which will be set out in your contract of employment. You will be issued with a Personal Assistants Handbook when your employment commences and be expected to undertake any mandatory training identified as relevant to this post. The cost of mandatory training will be met through direct payment. Failure to attend mandatory training may result in your employment offer being withdrawn.
Training costs will be covered, and a DBS check will be carried out at no cost to the applicant. The applicant may update their current DBS online at https://www.gov.uk/dbs-update-service.
