Wardell Armstrong have been providing expert archaeological and heritage services for over 25 years, during which time we have demonstrated our ability to provide effective and commercially aware advice to a wide range of clients throughout the UK. Our post-ex hubs in Carlisle and Bury St Edmunds are home to our purpose-built facilities, which provide finds analysis, palaeoenvironmental processing and analysis, post-excavation analysis, publication, and outreach.
The role
Our Senior/Principal Archaeologists support us with writing up reports, completing smaller scale reports (with support from our wider team), and making significant contribution to larger scale reporting. To this end you should have or be willing to develop your report writing skills, working understanding of Harris Matrix software, and the ability to interpret your findings on site.
We have a range of projects in our pipeline of work across the UK and Wales and jobs which require working away we offer an excellent subsistence package in addition to travel allowance and single occupancy accommodation. When not on site employees work on hybrid home/office basis.

Our company culture emphasises collaboration and development, with competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package including a company pension, healthcare, travel and life insurance, and a structured career framework with regular reviews and opportunities for progression. We offer 25 days of annual leave, additional flexible bank holidays, and flexible, agile and hybrid working with family-friendly policies.
About you
Successful candidates will have practical experience supervising work on site, a comprehensive awareness of Risk Assessment and keeping your team safe on site, experience delivering commercial archaeology, and a degree in Archaeology (combined honours acceptable) or equivalent experience. A driving license and own vehicle is essential. It would be highly advantageous to have CIfA membership at PCIfA or ACIfA level and SSSTS Qualification.
