Bursar Role in an Independent School
An established independent school in Surrey is seeking to appoint a Bursar to oversee the financial and operational management of the school. This is a full-time leadership role within a well-regarded school that values professionalism, strategic planning, and operational excellence.
The Bursar plays a key role in supporting the school’s leadership team, ensuring effective financial management, regulatory compliance, and smooth day-to-day operations across the school.
About the Role
You will be responsible for overseeing the financial, operational, and administrative functions of the school, supporting long-term strategic planning and ensuring resources are managed effectively.
The role includes budget management, financial reporting, premises oversight, contract management, compliance, HR support, and liaison with governors, suppliers, and external stakeholders.
You will work closely with the Headteacher and senior leadership team to ensure the school operates efficiently and continues to provide an excellent educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Oversee financial planning, budgeting, and reporting
* Manage school operations, contracts, and procurement
* Support premises, health and safety, and facilities management
* Ensure regulatory and compliance requirements are met
* Oversee payroll, HR administration, and operational systems where required
* Liaise with governors, auditors, suppliers, and external agencies
* Support strategic planning and school development priorities
* Ensure efficient resource management across the school

Candidate Requirements
Essential Requirements
* Experience in finance, operations, business management, or senior administration
* Strong financial planning and budget management skills
* Excellent organisational and leadership abilities
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
* Understanding of compliance, governance, and operational management
Desirable
* Experience working in a school or education setting
* Financial or business qualifications (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIPFA, MBA)
* Experience in independent school operations or bursarial leadership
