Locum Consultant Colorectal / General Surgeon from September / October 2025 for 1 year

(10 Programmed Activities)

SUMMARY:

We are looking for a locum consultant surgeon with an interest in Colorectal Surgery with sub specialty interests in IBD. This is a fixed term contract post for 12 months from point of start date, with a full working week of DCC commitments.

This is a sabbatical leave replacement post to join our surgical on-call team of a frequency of 1:12.

Main duties of the job

Key duties will include:

·Supervising and running outpatient clinics, operating lists (independent and in a supporting role for more complex cases)

·Taking part in the weekly Colorectal MDT.

·Endoscopy lists if JAG accredited or working towards accreditation.

·Care for patients on wards in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, including ward nurses and our wider acute team.

·Emergency work: Consultant General Surgery on-call of 1 in 12 schedule.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You must hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

It is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts. The merger took place on 1 April 2020 and under the umbrella of the single NHS Trust both hospitals retain their identity and individual hospital names. Key services will remain on both sites and be managed as single teams across the whole Bedfordshire catchment area. The Colorectal department is currently evolving with the development of robotic surgery on both sites from 2023.

Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register and have MRCP. Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT.

Residence is required within ten miles by road or thirty minutes travelling time of the Hospital.

The appointment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidate prior to commencement.

Person specification

Qualifications and Registration

Essential criteria

1. MB ChB or Equivalent.
2. FRCS (General Surgery) or equivalent
3. Full GMC registration with a licence to practise is mandatory before employment commences
4. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, CCT or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview

Desirable criteria

5. Post graduate qualification MSc, MD, PhD, MA, Masters in Education

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

6. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in General Surgery
7. Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
8. Experience in Laparoscopic Surgery
9. Experience in diagnostic and therapeutic Colonoscopy in Endoscopy with JAG accreditation or to be working towards this.
10. Comprehensive knowledge in Colorectal surgery and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems, both emergency and elective within General surgery.

Desirable criteria

11. Evidence of subspecialty training or Colorectal fellowship out of region

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria

12. Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance and individual responsibilities it implies
13. Knowledge of the principles of evidence-based practice
14. Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and direct experience of audit.
15. An interest which improves the General Surgery and colorectal pathway in all aspects

Desirable criteria

16. Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine
17. Implementation of evidence-based guidelines
18. Participation in relevant national audits.

Research

Essential criteria

19. Knowledge of the principles of research and ability to interpret and apply clinical research
20. Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems

Desirable criteria

21. Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal
22. Ability to supervise postgraduate research

Teaching

Essential criteria

23. Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
24. Understands learner centered teaching.
25. Completed a Teaching the Teachers or similar course within two years of appointment or agree to attend such a training course within one year of appointment.

Desirable criteria

26. Interest in teaching medical, nursing and other groups of staff

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria

27. Evidence of management experience or training.
28. Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
29. Ability to manage and lead department
30. Ability to organise and manage out-patient priorities and waiting lists

Desirable criteria

31. Ability to share departmental management duties e.g. staff rotas.

Personal attributes

Essential criteria

32. Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff
33. Able to organise, prioritise workload and the ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances
34. Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership
35. Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
36. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level
37. Able and willing to work with consultant colleagues in equitable sharing of clinical, non-clinical and on-call duties
38. Possess an enquiring and critical approach to work
39. Ability to present effectively to an audience, using variety of methods and to respond to questions
40. Satisfactory Trust health screening prior to appointment
41. Have a commitment to CME/CPD

42. Satisfactory DBS check

Knowledge and Standards

Essential criteria

43. Knowledge and Experience of Safeguarding for Children and Adults.
44. Knowledge and experience of general and Colorectal
45. Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC.
46. Confirmation of satisfactory appraisal signed off by Responsible Officer

Domicile

Essential criteria

47. Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
