GCSE English Teacher

Department: Foundation Learning

Salary: £27,350 to £41,194 per annum

Contract Type: Permanent Full time 37 hours per week

Reference: REC2286 | Closing Date: Sunday, 19th October 2025

The Opportunity

You will play a key role in delivering GCSE and Entry Level 3 English to a diverse range of learners. You will design and deliver engaging lessons that help our students build confidence, develop core communication skills and achieve recognised qualifications. Working closely with Tutorial Learning Mentors, you will support each learner’s academic progress and personal development, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

In this role, you will contribute to the planning and development of the curriculum, exploring creative methods of delivery that make English accessible and relevant. You will take an active part in course team meetings and departmental initiatives, sharing ideas and best practice to enhance teaching quality and learner outcomes. You will also play a part in the creation of new courses and resources that reflect the needs and aspirations of your learners.

You will be responsible for assessing and providing feedback on learners’ work in line with college policy, using formative assessment to track progress and support improvement. Alongside your teaching duties, you will provide academic and pastoral guidance, helping learners to develop confidence, resilience and independence in their studies.

This role gives you the chance to make a meaningful impact—helping students gain not only a qualification, but also the communication skills and self-belief they need for life, work and further study. By joining a supportive and innovative team, you will contribute to the continued success and growth of the Foundation Learning department at Barnsley College.

About You

You will be an enthusiastic and adaptable English teacher who believes in making language and literature accessible, engaging and meaningful for every learner. You understand that English is more than a subject—it’s a life skill—and you are committed to helping our students gain both the confidence and competence to use it effectively in their studies, work and everyday life.

You should hold a recognised teaching qualification (Cert Ed, PGCE or equivalent) and a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in English. Experience of teaching GCSE and/or Functional Skills English is essential, ideally within a further education or alternative learning environment. You’ll have the ability to plan and deliver creative, learner-centred lessons that cater to a wide range of abilities and learning styles.

You will have strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive, supportive relationships with learners who may face barriers to education. Patience, empathy and a genuine passion for helping others succeed will be at the heart of your teaching approach.

Collaboration is key in this role—you’ll work closely with colleagues across the Foundation Learning team to share ideas, resources and good practice. You’ll also take an active role in developing curriculum content, experimenting with new delivery methods and contributing to strategies that enhance learner engagement and achievement.
