Medical Laboratory Assistant – General Pathology

Location: Laboratory Medicine, Level 3, Torbay Hospital
Hours: 18.75 hours per week (core 13:30‑5; 5‑6 on rotation). Saturday and bank holidays may be required.
Job Summary
The Central Pathology Reception supports the laboratory in pre‑analytical processing and data entry of over 3,000 blood samples a day, plus ~600 microbiology samples. You will work in a team, handling testing samples, communicating with clinical staff and visitors, and ensuring accurate data entry into the Laboratory Information System (Epic Beaker) and order‑comms (Clinisys ICE).
Responsibilities
* Receive, prepare, and data‑process pathology samples and test request forms.
* Prepare blood, urine, faeces and fluid samples for analysis.
* Handle routine telephone calls to/from GPs, medical, nursing and other healthcare staff.
* Assist visitors at the reception hatch.
* Provide discipline‑specific assistance to laboratory staff.
* Enter data via Electronic Order‑Comms and typed entry from request forms, barcode samples, and check for accuracy.
* Refer complex queries to senior staff.
Person Specification
Essential
* Excellent communication skills.
* Accurate, methodical, and good at data input.
* Proficient keyboard and general education.
Desirable
* Knowledge of pathology or specific terminology.
