NPD Design Engineer - Crushing and Screening
Location: Omagh, Northern Ireland (preferred)
About the Role Under general supervision of the Lead Engineer, the NPD Design Engineer is responsible for design efforts from inception through production in new product development. This position will focus on Mobile Plants – self-powered and self-contained rock crushing and screening plants mounted on a tracked platform for mobility, incorporating on-board power systems, hydraulics, electrical controls, and mechanical systems including drives, crushers, feeders, screens and conveyors. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with other engineers and cross-functional teams (sales, manufacturing, purchasing, service). They will develop conceptual and final design solutions, manage and coordinate project activities, support existing product offerings, and perform testing or analysis of new and existing products to advance Astec’s product line development goals.
Responsibilities
* Design from concept through production for new products, with emphasis on Mobile Plants.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements and deliverables.
* Develop conceptual and final design solutions; manage project activities within schedule and budget.
* Perform testing or analysis of new and existing products to meet development goals.
* Support designs through procurement, build, and test.
* Provide innovative design concepts and problem-solving during the design process.
* Utilize 3-D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
* Develop/guide computations such as load, stress, hydraulic analysis, costing, and interpret results as needed.
* Read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and adhere to standards.
* Understand materials and material properties, manufacturing practices including cutting, forming, and welding of metals.
* Make a financial and technical case for engineering decisions.
* Maintain positive working relationships with customers, vendors, co-workers, and management; work independently and as part of a team.
* Demonstrate good organization and time-management skills.
Required Criteria
* Follow and actively support all company policies and procedures, with a strong emphasis on safe operations.
* Minimum bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Agriculture, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or related field.
* Minimum 3 years of experience in equipment design and manufacturing (mechanical, structural, hydraulic, and electrical/control system design).
* Ability to take responsibility for completing projects to due dates and predefined requirements with minimal supervision.
* Ability to support designs through procurement, build and test.
* Innovative and able to develop new design concepts and solutions to design process challenges.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office, 3-D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and ERP systems.
* Ability to develop computations such as load development, stress analysis, hydraulic circuit analysis, and costing; interpret results as necessary.
* Understanding of the engineering design process and new product development.
* Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and standards.
* Understanding of materials science and material properties as they relate to engineering and material selection.
* Ability to justify engineering design decisions with financial and technical rationale.
* Understanding of manufacturing practices including cutting, forming, and welding of metals.
* Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships and communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
* Good organization and time-management skills.
Desired Criteria
* Experience in the design of complete Mobile Crushing or Screening plants from concept to production.
* Experience in the use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
