NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. The Role

The role of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde PPSU is to:

* Ensure that patients derive maximum benefit and minimum harm from their medicines
* Provide a single system approach to pharmacy and prescribing policy issues, including integration of systems within pharmacy and prescribing support functions
* Support clinicians in their provision of high quality, effective and efficient pharmaceutical care to individual patients at whatever their point of need in their healthcare journey
* Provide prescribers and managers with high quality, timely information, analysis and advice to assist them to deliver effective prescribing management
* Ensure that medicines are purchased, stored, dispensed and prescribed as cost effectively as possible


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

Permanent, Full time

New Victoria Hospital

Shift Pattern - 8.45 – 17.00 Monday to Thursday 8.45 - 16.30 Friday. (45mins for lunch)


Key Responsibilities

* Manage stock control systems, including checks, rotation, expiry monitoring, and discrepancies
* Dispense and prepare medicines, including high‑cost items and clinical trials
* Train and support Pharmacy staff
* Action and report stock discrepancies; liaise on high‑cost medicine issues
* Coordinate medicine recalls
* Support discharge by accurately dispensing checked prescriptions
* Check kardexes and order missing items
* Complete environmental monitoring (fridges, freezers, air pressures)
* Comply with legislation, ethics, and NHSGGC standards
* Communicate effectively across Pharmacy and wider team
* Participate in PDP, KSF, and ongoing development
* Train and support new staff; participate in weekend/holiday rotas
* Prepare, clean, and maintain equipment
* Check components for product preparation
* Over‑label and pre‑pack medicines; supervise processes
* Act as robotic system expert
* Complete audit and statistical tasks
* Prepare products and complete transfer processes per SOPs
* Perform required validations
* Generate worksheets/labels and complete transcription/formulary checks
* Fill liquid nitrogen containers where appropriate
* Act as PDC Service Lead and elevate issues
* Manage vaccine supply and campaigns
* Provide patient education
* Take medication histories and perform controlled drug checks after training
* Follow formulary policy and participate in governance/audit
* Maintain communication with ward staff and community pharmacies
* Dispense and prepare medicines per GMP, QA, QC, COSHH, H&S, and SOPs
* Perform in‑process checks on others’ work
* Maintain intrathecal training
* Update SOPs under senior direction
* Participate in clinical trial dispensing and aseptic activities
* Liaise with Portfolio Pharmacists/Technicians to ensure consistent trial services


Manage technical aspects of clinical trials

* Dispensing
* Accountability records
* Trial files and documentation
* Temperature/expiry monitoring
* Ordering
* Disposal/destruction
* Liaise with Research Staff
* Work to GCP, EU directives, and SOPs
* Maintain documentation and safe systems of work
* Conduct environmental monitoring and remedial actionsParticipate in audits and workload statistics
* Perform final accuracy checks on prescriptions and assembled items


Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job


Essential

* UK Registered Pharmacy Technician (General Pharmaceutical Council – Reg.Pharm.Tec.)
* Completed current GPhC approved competency and knowledge based qualifications e.g. S/NVQ Pharmacy Level 3 and NC Pharmaceutical Sciences and a qualifying period of work experience.
* Good IT Skills including MS Office Word and Excel
* Ability to communicate in clear spoken English and effective written and verbal communication
* A commitment to participate in ongoing relevant training and Continual Professional Development (CPD)
* Experience of interacting with people in a variety of situations
* Ability to organise daily tasks using own initiative
* Ability to work to set procedures
* Stock management experience
* Ability to work as part of a team


Desirable

* A commitment to achieving an accredited accuracy checking qualification
* Experience of supervising/training/mentoring staff
