WHY JOIN THE TEAM

The Digital Editing team is a small, highly productive and supportive team. You will join other senior journalists and be led by an assistant editor. Specialising in investigations, we take pride in bringing some of the best BBC journalism to the top slots of the News website. The stories we work on are read by millions of people and often have real-world impact. The team helps correspondents and reporters tell their stories in the best way possible for a digital audience - whether that be drawing-out sharp, impactful news lines, or guiding readers through a complicated subject with the help of a personal case study. We work a hybrid pattern across the week Monday to Friday, sometimes working late or at weekends when deadlines demand.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

* Liaise with correspondents from the moment of commissioning - steering the structure, narrative and news lines of exclusive investigations, in text
* Intensive editing of stories, often working through multiple drafts, to ensure writers stay on brief and to the agreed length, while feeding back to stakeholders and absorbing their views
* Ensure finished articles are tightly and clearly written, slickly produced and compellingly sold through sharp headlines and push alerts
* Assist busy reporting teams and, on occasion, write articles from scratch
* Source relevant information graphics and illustrative images, working closely with the picture desk and design team - as well as legal and Editorial Policy, and the Social and Growth teams
* Follow commissions to conclusion, which on occasion, will mean working late or at weekends, incorporating last-minute edits as stories approach deadline

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE - KEY CRITERIA

* Significant experience as a digital platforms text journalist - with a proven track record of covering the UK and international news agenda
* Excellent editorial judgement and experience of commissioning and shaping complex text narratives, as news stories or features
* Razor-sharp text editing skills, particularly around investigations and long-form commissions, and the ability to reorder and rewrite copy quickly and collaboratively
* Deep appreciation of the significance of text as a medium and, with a view to this, experience of robustly challenging teams on editorial matters
* Experience of using high quality digital production including video, stills and graphics, in storytelling
* Track record of writing compelling headlines and pushes for complex and often sensitive stories
* Ability to juggle multiple projects and work flexibly when deadlines move or stories change
