Overview
In conjunction with, and supported by, the designated Training Coordinator/Officer, the Trainee Clinical Scientist will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme. The role involves completing learning outcomes outlined in the Learning Guides, progressing through work‑based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments, and undertaking a complementary academic master’s programme at a designated Higher Education Institution. Trainees will rotate through other areas, which may involve placements at other locations. Upon completion of training, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent, with opportunities to progress to Consultant Clinical Scientist.
Responsibilities
* Complete the full learning programme as specified in the Learning Guides.
* Progress through work‑based competence and experience in NHS scientific departments.
* Undertake a master’s programme at a higher education institution.
* Rotate through other areas and/or locations as required by the training plan.
* Participate in collaborative research and quality improvement projects.
* Contribute to the design, validation and troubleshooting of laboratory techniques.
Qualifications – Essential
* Honours degree (1st or 2.1) in a pure or applied science relevant to the specialism. Applicants with a 2.2 degree will also be considered if they hold an MSc or PhD in the relevant specialism.
* Understanding of quality control and management assurance in a scientific or work‑based context.
* Understanding of the role of the chosen specialism in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare setting.
* Knowledge acquired through study and experience to formulate appropriate advice and judgments.
* Experience with supervised clinical activity to postgraduate diploma level.
Qualifications – Desirable
* Evidence of research experience (e.g., higher degree or equivalent evidence of scientific and academic capability).
* A committed in‑depth interest in scientific practice and its application to direct clinical care of patients.
* Ability to develop proficiency in routine and complex techniques currently in use and to develop and validate new techniques.
* Ability to design research investigations and experiments.
* Ability to identify problems associated with scientific equipment, inappropriate testing, and incompatible results, and investigate these, plan corrective action in consultation with senior colleagues, and follow up.
* Ability to work under pressure and prioritise and plan work.
* Welsh language skills desirable (levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading and writing).

The post is fixed‑term for 3 years due to funding. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply. Start salary will be on the first point of Band 6.
