For 30 years, we’ve been independently developing and publishing incredible video games at our multiple studios founded by Jason & Chris Kingsley. Rebellion is more than just games; we have our own film studio, create board games, publish books, and through 2000AD, publish comics and graphic novels such as Judge Dredd.
We are seeking an experienced Design Director with exceptional leadership and people management skills to guide our talented team on an unannounced project. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to shape development from the start.
As Design Director, you will be the vision holder for your project, ensuring consistency and timely delivery of high-quality design across all aspects of the game. Your role is to empower and support the Design Team to drive and define a creative vision for the game universe and gameplay experience. We value face-to-face collaboration and encourage working from our Oxford headquarters. However, we are open to discussing hybrid options based on individual needs.
Responsibilities:
1. Act as a spokesperson for the Design Team, communicating updates and gameplay demos to the Head of Design, and internal and external senior management stakeholders.
2. Obtain and maintain buy-in from key stakeholders and the executive group throughout the project, ensuring alignment with the vision and scope.
3. Contribute to the delivery of the design department’s goals, strategy, and initiatives, supporting recruitment, learning, development, and resource planning.
4. Collaborate with other discipline directors and production leadership to design, maintain, and deliver on project scope and schedules, ensuring clear communication.
5. Influence project priorities and roadmap, facilitating execution on schedule and in line with design direction.
6. Support Lead Designers in developing engaging, innovative gameplay experiences that align with the overall design brief, goals, and brand.
7. Act as a project champion for Design, supporting all aspects of game design from pre-production to delivery.
8. Verify design quality in the game, documents, and prototypes; provide feedback and suggest improvements to refine the game within constraints.
Requirements:
* Expertise in creating game design documents and prototype specifications.
* Strong knowledge of the video game development process, including timely work and effective prototyping/iteration.

* Understanding of target audiences to ensure design serves them well.
* Exceptional communication and relationship skills to lead project leads and align with business strategy.
