Principal Highways Engineer (Liveable Places) – UK & Ireland
Join WSP to apply for the Principal Highways Engineer (Liveable Places) role. We are seeking a Principal engineer with a strong background in design management and project management to lead sustainable transport and public realm improvement projects from inception to completion, primarily in London.
Key Responsibilities
* Design Management: Oversee the design process, ensuring all work meets the highest standards and client requirements. Manage the design team, coordinate with other departments, and ensure timely, on‑budget delivery.
* Project Management: Plan, schedule, budget, and allocate resources for the overall project. Ensure milestones are met and the project is completed on time and within budget.
* Client Liaison: Act as the main point of contact for clients, keeping them informed of progress throughout the project.
* Risk Management: Identify and manage project risks, resolving issues quickly and effectively.
* Quality Assurance: Ensure all design work meets the highest quality standards and resolve any issues promptly.
* Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the design team, ensuring effective and efficient collaboration.
Typical Week Includes
* Prepare highways designs for construction projects and coordinate input from other disciplines.
* Develop drawings, design details, specifications, BoQ, and design calculations.
* Attend client and internal progress meetings and maintain action trackers.
* Liaise with discipline leads, preparing updates to programme schedules and ensuring inter‑dependencies are managed.
* Implement QA/QM procedures, assist with Project Execution Plans, and carry out resulting actions.
* Maintain project commercial risk registers and support preparation of design H&S risk plans and schedules.
* Coordinate inputs from technical disciplines and disseminate project information across teams.
* Coordinate technical decision logs.
* Oversee preparation of fee proposals and change control documents.
* Compile task assignment documents and arrange internal approvals.
* Support internal financial reporting processes, including forecasting.
* Prepare RAMS for site surveys and participate in site visits as required.
* Own updating project plans and managing document control using SharePoint.
* Plan and deliver project milestones and deliverables.
* Raise orders for supply chain partners’ technical support.
What We Will Be Looking For
* Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
* Experience in design management and project management.
* Holder of a relevant professional qualification (IENG or CEng) or close to obtaining one.
* Strong leadership and team management skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to report to senior level.
* Proven track record of leading design projects from inception to completion.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work under pressure.
