Clinical Nurse Specialist/Genetic Counsellor PTEN Hamartoma Syndrome

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust offers an opportunity for a Clinical Nurse Specialist/Genetic Counsellor to work for the Wessex Clinical Genetics Service (WCGS) based at the University Hospital Southampton (UHS). UHS is the designated network lead centre for the PTEN Hamartoma Tumour Syndrome (PHTS) Rare Disease Clinical Network, led by Dr Katherine Lachlan, Consultant Clinical Geneticist. The overarching aim of this funded role is to facilitate equity of access to care and research into PHTS in England and the wider UK.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Nurse Specialist/Genetic Counsellor will be responsible for supporting the development of the national UK PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS) Multi-Disciplinary Team Meeting. The meeting is held virtually and provides a forum for discussion and advice, together with signposting and development of appropriate referral pathways. The post involves liaison with many specialties and other Trusts across the UK. The holder will be the key worker for patients and families affected by PHTS referred to WCGS to co‑coordinate their care and provide accurate, up‑to‑date information. Primary responsibility for specialist care coordination for this patient/client group and practice autonomously as a core member of the multi‑disciplinary team.
Job responsibilities
* Provide leadership in PTEN clinical research delivery locally and nationally. Specialist for own area of work or clinical speciality.
* Act as a source of advice and expertise within own speciality; lead research and audit projects including development, design and implementation.
* Lead or be lead on multidisciplinary team research projects, advise and monitor research conducted by other health professionals; disseminate findings.
* Provide specialist advice, education and support to patients, carers and other health professionals.
* Practice clinically in agreed care settings and advise divisions regarding overall management of the service.
* Develop and support patient‑centred seamless care across professional, departmental and Trust boundaries.
* Lead nurse‑led/Genetic Counsellor care initiatives.
Qualifications, knowledge and experience
* Registered Nurse/Midwife or similar with a relevant nursing / health related degree or MSc in a related field (Genetic Counsellor).
* Relevant post registration qualifications or demonstration of an equivalent level of knowledge.
* Enrolled nurse or equivalent; relevant experience at band 6 level or above.
* Experience working within a multidisciplinary team and with adults, adults lacking capacity and children.
* Ability to travel independently across the region.
* Experience working within protocols and developing protocols.
* Theoretical and practical knowledge relating to PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome and its management.
* Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification up to date; willingness to undertake further training to enhance scope of practice.
* Teaching qualification.
* Research experience including applying for ethical approval, using research databases, consent processes, and data analysis.
* Experience in genetic counselling, community practice, writing patient information, annual reports, audit, service development.
* Proficient in phlebotomy.
* Working knowledge of PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome and its impact on patients and their families.
* NIHR Good Clinical Practice & Informed consent certification, including for children and adults lacking capacity.
* Research qualification.
