Closing Date 12th February 2026 Submissions to Membership@llg.org.uk Applications for the position of Deputy Vice President of Lawyers in Local Government are now invited. If you have the strategic vision to lead the company at pace whilst applying creative vision to the provision of membership services; this role will provide a stimulating, rewarding and career enhancing opportunity placing you in direct contact with key stakeholders and corporate partners. The Deputy Vice President role will commence from the AGM on 29th April 2026 with the successful candidate automatically appointed as Vice President in 2027 and LLG President in 2028. The successful candidate will be required to undertake the duties as set out below which may include covering events and meetings in the evening or at the weekend. This workload is likely to increase in the role of Vice President and will significantly increase on taking up the Presidency. It is therefore important that you ensure your employer is comfortable with you taking on the role and willing to allow you to be flexible in continuing to meet work commitments as well as commitments in the role of not just Deputy Vice President, but also in the roles of Vice President and President. The role is not remunerated, but expenses will be paid in line with the company’s expense policy for directors, together with paid for attendance at the LLG Spring Conference and LLG Governance Conference. LLG has been extremely successful in the last few years, operating under a position of leadership within the sector. As a result, those seeking nomination should be clear that they are capable of representing the sector in meetings and workstreams on local government law and governance. This includes meetings with government ministers and civil servants; stakeholders at the top level including the LGA, Law Society, SRA, Ombudsman, SOLACE, CIPFA, ADSO, NALC and SLCC; the press (including trade press, national press & radio) and leading local government officers and members. Ability to represent LLG members at all levels. Commitment to LLG. Capacity to represent LLG effectively and with impact at all levels Excellent communication and presentation skills. Strategic experience and/or understanding Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities Please also provide a statement about yourself together with a photograph to be released to the membership should you proceed to election to enable them to decide who to vote for. The LLG Board will assess all applications and determine whether or not the criteria has been met before proceeding (if so determined) to a membership election. The Presidential Team may hold interviews to assist in their determination of suitability to proceed. These interviews will take place between 16th and 25th February 2026. Please submit an application to Membership@llg.org.uk no later than 5pm on 12th February 2026 Timelines 12th February 2026 Closing Date for Applications 27th February 2026 Board will determine criteria met within applications and approve for member election where relevant 2nd March 2026 Candidates notified of outcome and elections launched to relevant membership colleges. 16th March 2026 Elections closed. 18th March 2026 Applicants notified of results. 7th April 2026 Notice of AGM with Special Resolution AGM 29th April 2026 AGM and appointment. Board meetings are held monthly, usually on a Friday morning and area mix of remote and hybrid. The board aims to have the opportunity to meet 3 times a year as a board and ideally would like to offer more in person opportunities to meet, however these will always have a remote attendance option. There are two in-person conferences per year (Spring and Governance Conference). Criteria Must be a full member of Lawyers in Local Government Must be currently actively working within Local Government Must be capable of holding a director position in England and Wales under company law Knowledge of the local government sector. Ability to represent LLG members at all levels. Commitment to LLG. Capacity to represent LLG effectively and with impact at all levels Excellent communication and presentation skills. Strategic experience and/or understanding Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities Job Description Board Director: Play a full and active role in LLG, taking part in discussions and encouraging debate Prepare well for meetings, reading papers and thinking through issues Contribute in a considered and constructive way Complete any action points as agreed and to timetable Make decisions in the best interests of LLG for the good of the wider membership, not just your own authority Ensure LLG is well run through appropriate challenge Raise issues and questions in a sensitive way Keep up to date with the workings of LLG and the local government sector Act in good faith and be accountable for your actions Respect majority decisions even when you are in the minority Have a working knowledge of the mem & arts Actively contribute to improving the governance of the board Work to identify and encourage candidates to ensure succession to the board LLG would ask that you aim to attend 6 board meetings a year plus ideally our two residential conferences and be willing to communicate by email or teams/zoom between meetings. Deputy Vice President Job Description: as board director, plus the following additional requirements As a member of the LLG Board to contribute to devising the policy and strategy for the future direction of LLG including preparing papers for the Boards as appropriate. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including responding to emails and preparing papers as appropriate. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG as required. Vice President as board director, plus the following additional requirements To have been a member of the LLG Board for at least a year To assist and support the President as required in his/her role as the national figurehead and point of contact for LLG, including attending meetings and conferences. As a member of the LLG Board to contribute to devising the policy and strategy for the future direction of LLG including preparing papers for the Boards as appropriate. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including responding to emails and preparing papers where appropriate. To support the President in engaging with the membership and attending membership functions as necessary including the residential conferences. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG as required. President As Board Director, Plus The Following Additional Requirements To act as the national figurehead and point of contact for LLG. To chair the Board and Executive Board and all other relevant meetings of LLG as required. To publicise the work of LLG through traditional and social media including by writing a blog on the LLG website, contributing to press articles and posting on Twitter. To forge contacts with and where possible attend relevant meetings, of stakeholders of LLG (including social occasions) as the lead officer and representative of LLG. (In particular but without restriction, including government departments, member local authorities, the LGA, the Law Society, the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the Local Government Legal Society Trust, private sector solicitors’ firms, chambers and private sector providers to local authority legal services, in particular LLG's corporate partners) in conjunction with the CEO. To forge contacts with international organisations with similar membership, aims and objectives of LLG. To undertake a workload on behalf of LLG including responding to email enquiries from stakeholders and members and preparing papers for the Boards of LLG wherever appropriate. To lead and give strategic focus to LLG, engaging with the membership and attending membership functions including annual conferences, branch meetings and meetings of other groupings of LLG members. Giving strategic direction on behalf of LLG to its employed officers and to officers of LGG, where appropriate. Forge a close working relationship with the CEO. To accept engagements as a speaker at conferences and other relevant events to raise the profile of LLG and communicate its aims and objectives. To undertake such other activity or communication as from time to time might be necessary in the interests of and/or to the benefit of LLG. Terms Candidates put forward for election will be at the absolute discretion of the Board of Directors. Any candidate not determined as meeting the criteria will be given written reasons for this decision. Voting will take place via electronic poll sent to those members registered as full members on the LLG website. Candidates will be advised of the specific voting count.
