Geotechnical Design Engineer (Chartered)
Location: Central London
Package: Excellent salary + comprehensive benefits
A respected, design-led engineering consultancy in Central London is looking to appoint a Chartered Geotechnical Design Engineer to join a specialist team delivering complex urban projects where ground behaviour, piling solutions and soil–structure interaction are critical to success.
This is not a logging/GI role. This is for an engineer who enjoys the analysis and design side of geotechnics — the kind of work where your calculations directly inform retaining strategies, foundation solutions and ground movement risk on constrained city sites.
You’ll be working on technically challenging schemes involving deep basements, high-rise structures, tight boundary conditions and sensitive adjacent assets, where finite-element modelling, piling design and ground movement assessment sit at the heart of the project.
What you’ll be doing
Geotechnical analysis and design for complex urban developments
Piling and foundation design (bearing piles, piled rafts, pile-assisted rafts)
Retaining wall solutions including secant, diaphragm and embedded walls
Detailed ground movement assessment and soil–structure interaction modelling
Finite-element modelling using software such as PLAXIS / WALLAP (or similar)
Working closely with structural and temporary works engineers to deliver integrated solutions
Assessing risk to adjacent structures and infrastructure
Producing high-quality technical reports, calculations and design deliverables
Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical excellence within the team
What they’re looking for
Chartered Engineer (CEng) – ICE or equivalent
Strong background in geotechnical design (not site investigation focused)
Proven experience in piling design, retaining structures and foundation solutions
Experience carrying out ground movement assessments on urban sites
Working knowledge of finite-element analysis tools (PLAXIS preferred)
Excellent understanding of soil mechanics and soil–structure interaction
Comfortable working on complex projects with tight constraints and high technical demand
Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise with multidisciplinary teams
Why this role stands out
Design-led consultancy where geotechnics is central, not secondary
Exposure to some of the most technically challenging ground engineering projects in London
Genuine opportunity to influence design strategy from early stages
Supportive, highly technical environment with like-minded engineers
Excellent package, flexible working and long-term progression
If you are a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer who enjoys solving the kinds of problems where ground behaviour drives the design, this is a rare opportunity to join a consultancy where your expertise will be at the core of every project
