Principal Drainage & Flood Risk Engineer

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Principal or Senior Drainage / Flood Risk Engineer to join a growing infrastructure team. This is an excellent opportunity to take a lead role on a diverse range of private development projects, including commercial units, retail parks, residential schemes and complex highway‑related infrastructure works. You will play a key role in supporting the business across multiple workstreams, providing technical leadership on drainage and flood risk projects while helping to shape and grow the team.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Design
* Lead the design and delivery of drainage and infrastructure solutions for private developments and associated highway works
* Develop SUDS strategies and produce adoptable drainage and road designs
* Utilise industry software including Civil 3D, PDS, MicroDrainage/Causeway Flow and AutoCAD
* Prepare Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies
* Undertake site inspections and attend technical and design meetings
Project Leadership
* Manage projects to ensure delivery within agreed budgets, programmes and quality standards
* Provide technical leadership across project teams
* Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs to achieve project objectives
* Support business growth by contributing to new workstreams and client development
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
* Liaise with statutory bodies, including local authorities, highways teams and water authorities
* Build and maintain strong client relationships
* Provide expert technical advice on drainage and flood risk throughout project lifecycle
Quality & Compliance
* Ensure designs comply with regulatory requirements and best practice guidance
* Maintain high standards of technical excellence and service delivery
* Support internal quality assurance processes
Leadership & Mentoring
* Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians
* Encourage knowledge sharing and professional development within the team
* Help foster a collaborative and positive working culture
Qualifications & Experience
* Degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline)
* Chartered or working toward chartership (ICE, CIWEM or equivalent)
* Strong post‑graduate experience in drainage and flood risk engineering
* Proven background in private development and highway‑related infrastructure schemes
* Proficiency in relevant design software
* Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
* Experience managing budgets and project programmes
* Strong problem‑solving ability and sound engineering judgement
