Job Description Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Engineer specializing in HVDC System Design and Studies. The role involves interpreting customer technical enquiries, designing cost‑effective HVDC solutions that leverage power electronics, and specifying key high‑value equipment for HVDC projects. The successful candidate will also contribute to the development of tools, processes, and technology for HVDC System Engineering, representing GE to external stakeholders and internal teams across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
* Oversee the overall technical solution that meets customer requirements based on reference solutions.
* Identify and drive improvements in engineering, operational tools, processes, and systems to enhance customer value and business efficiency.
* Uphold the principles of Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost (SQDC) within the teams.
* Work closely with team managers to plan execution strategies, provide engineering estimates, identify risks and develop mitigation strategies for new opportunities.
* Develop and maintain technical specifications, guidance notes, and standards for HVDC systems.
* Participate in the Patent Evaluation Board to protect technologies and intellectual property rights.
* Represent the business externally at conferences and in professional bodies (IEC, CIGRE, etc.) and cultivate relationships with academic institutions.
* Provide ad‑hoc technical guidance to the Engineering/Technology leadership team, including customer negotiations or supplier audits.
* Develop an integrated scheme design that meets customer needs, optimizing the ratings and functionalities of HVDC system subsystems.
* Manage the lifecycle of high‑economic‑value high‑voltage equipment such as transformers, reactors, capacitors, and surge arresters—covering requirements, specifications, supplier management, and testing.
* Conduct reliability, availability, and maintainability studies and management.
* Create, verify, and validate electrical power losses models for HVDC systems and subsystems.
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers on control, protection, and integration issues.
* Participate in design reviews and verify project proposals as a subject‑matter expert.
* Stay updated with emerging technologies, standards, and best practices in HVDC systems.
* Maintain an active role in product introduction, cost improvements, schedule adherence, and problem resolution.
* Support consulting engineers with staff development, succession planning, and recruitment activities.
