Fixed term appointment Chief Registrar

General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our dynamic team providing acute GIM and Geriatric Medicine services to the people of Newham. This would suit either a full time or part time candidate and will be available from August 2026.

Newham University Hospital is a district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role, serving one of the most ethnically diverse populations in the UK.

The Care of the Elderly Department has an age related policy for medical admissions, with ongoing care of medical emergencies in patients aged 75 years and above. This is in association with a General Medical (all ages) integrated on call rota. The Geriatric consultants also provide the majority input into the Medical Admissions Team, as well as providing Stroke, Frailty and community services.

The successful applicant will contribute to the acute GIM service at Newham University Hospital (NUH), with full commitment to the integrated general medical on call rota (Registrar level). They will have continued management of older medical inpatients on an acute geriatric ward. They will also contribute to outpatient services in Care of the Elderly. There is also the opportunity to participate in specialist clinics, such as Diagnostic Memory Clinic and TIA clinic, and participate in Nursing Home visits. They will also provide input into the Acute Frailty service and the frailty virtual ward.

Main duties of the job

The Chief registrar will focus on addressing key local challenges and priorities, which may include some or all of the following:

·Providing a ‘bridge’ between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale.

·Service improvement, for example redesigning pathways, implementing new technology and establishing new services to improve flow and outcomes for patients.

·Improving the quality of clinical and non-clinical education and training activities, and supporting/mentoring other trainees to engage in quality improvement.

·Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and improve morale.

·Improving efficiency and reducing waste.

·Working across teams and boundaries to engage stakeholders in quality improvement and influence change.

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria

1. Full registration with General Medical Council
2. Be fit to practise
3. Should be NTN ST4 or above
4. Can include locally employed doctors at experience equivalent to ST4 or above
5. Should not already hold a CCT or expected to leave the programme before completion
6. Must have approval of TPD to apply (NTNs)
7. Evidence of satisfactory / more than satisfactory progress through training, including annual review of competence progression (ARCP) outcomes or appraisal

Desirable criteria

8. Additional relevant degree (intercalated, master’s or doctorate)

Clinical skills

Essential criteria

9. Evidence of clinical competencies in their specialty appropriate for their stage in training (or equivalent)
10. An appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
11. Ability to prioritise clinical need
12. Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
13. Ability to work without supervision where appropriate

Research

Essential criteria

14. Understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
15. Understanding of research methodology and ability to use basic qualitative and quantitative methods
16. Knowledge of evidence-based practice

Desirable criteria

17. Evidence of relevant academic achievements, including publications / presentations

Leadership and management

Essential criteria

18. Evidence of effective team working and leadership, supported by multi-source feedback or workplace-based assessments
19. Self-awareness, with knowledge of personal strengths and weaknesses, impact and areas for development
20. Interest in and knowledge of the importance of leadership and management for clinicians

Desirable criteria

21. Evidence of involvement in local management systems
22. Evidence of effective leadership (eg evidence of leading innovations or improvements) Understanding of the local and national
23. Understanding of the local and national context of the NHS, including economic and political influences
