Field Service Engineer – Machine Tools (CNC / High-Tech Equipment)
Location: Home-based covering the North East region, with UK-wide travel as required.
Role Overview
You will be responsible for the installation, commissioning, training, maintenance, and service of high-end CNC machine tools (mills, grinders, lathes) for a leading manufacturing equipment company. This role involves extensive travel to customer sites, often with short notice, and occasionally work on weekends.
Key Responsibilities
Provide on-site and in-house support to customers: installation, commissioning, and system hand-over.
Train customer personnel on machine operation, maintenance and best practice.
Service, maintain and upgrade CNC machine tools at customer locations.
Replace sub-assembly modules, control boards and components as needed.
Perform scheduled and reactive maintenance, and support machine relocations if required.
Travel at short notice to sites across the UK; stay away from home when required.
Work independently, manage your own time and service schedule, and deliver high customer satisfaction and uptime for clients.
Essential Skills & Experience
Background in CNC machine tool servicing, maintenance or installation (mills, lathes, grinders) in a manufacturing environment.
Strong mechanical aptitude.
Good electrical / control-system understanding, particularly experience (or strong interest) in Siemens and Heidenhain CNC controls.
Excellent fault-finding skills: mechanical, electrical and control software.
Able to train customer staff and present technical information clearly.
Self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and responsive to customer needs with short notice travel.
Full UK driving licence.
Willingness to work occasional weekends and be flexible with travel.
Desirable/Bonus Skills
Formal qualification in mechanical, electrical, mechatronics or similar (e.g., HNC, HND, City & Guilds).
Previous field service engineer experience.
Experience with high-end manufacturing equipment, automation systems, robotics or precision manufacturing.
Familiarity with machine tool alignment, geometry, calibration and advanced diagnostics.
Compensation & Benefits
Base salary: £40-£45,000 (depending on experience).
On-target earnings (OTE): up to £60,000.
Standard 39-hour working week. Overtime: flat rate Monday-Friday; x1.5 Saturday; x2 Sunday.
