Job overview

We are looking for a Medical Secretary to join the Neurology Team at York Hospital, for 30 hours per week.

Our successful candidate will work as part of a team, taking a lead role in providing a full and comprehensive PA and secretarial service to designated Consultants and their teams.

This is a busy fast paced department with a lovely community feel.

Main duties of the job

1. Provide a full and comprehensive personal assistant/secretarial service to Consultants and full clinical team members
2. Accurately transcribe complicated dictation with complex medical terminology
3. Compose letters as appropriate and undertake transcription of dictation
4. Receive and process all incoming mail, bringing this and other relevant matters to timely attention of the medical staff and taking appropriate action, escalating issues to the relevant clinician as needed
5. Triage calls, being the first point of contact, dealing sympathetically with people who may be bereaved, distressed or angry, using tact, persuasion and discretion. Assessing priorities.
6. Demonstrate excellent organisational skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, prioritising workload, cope with multi-tasks and work to deadlines
7. Keep RTT updated for your consultants and escalate to Operations Management as appropriate.

Education, Qualifications, and Training

Essential criteria

16. Educated to GCSE Level or equivalent. English at C or above – or equivalent qualification/demonstrable experience.
17. Typing skills/qualifications such as RSA/OCR 3 or equivalent demonstrable experience

Desirable criteria

18. ECDL

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

19. Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
20. Thorough knowledge of medical terminology
21. Minimum 2 years secretarial/administrative experience
22. Experience of working in a customer focused environment
23. Experience of supervising staff.

24. Able to communicate complex information effectively, clearly, and accurately in plain simple language, both verbally and in writing.
25. I am organised, prioritise my own workload and take responsibility for delivering results within agreed timescales with changing priorities, pressures and with frequent interruptions
