Internship Exploring General Business & Beyond
The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is sponsoring the Urban Youth Collaborative program, offering students aged 18 to 24 the opportunity to enrich their lives and those of individuals receiving supports within the Metro Region. The program aims to expose young adults to the field of Human Services, encouraging careers supporting people with developmental disabilities. Careers in this field include roles such as lawyers, accountants, program directors, residential staff, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, among others.
The Metro DDS Region, based in Waltham, covers four Area Offices: Greater Boston (Hyde Park), Charles River West (Somerville), Newton/South Norfolk (Walpole), and Middlesex West (Framingham). The summer program runs from mid-May to Labor Day Weekend, with a maximum duration of 90 days. Participants must be available for the entire summer session, as vacations are not permitted. A valid driver’s license is required for all participants.
Responsibilities (not exhaustive):
* Provide personal care support and facilitate community involvement for individuals.
* Support and encourage community interaction and integration.
* Accompany individuals on community outings such as concerts, Patriots training camp, trips to aquariums, restaurants, libraries, and coffee shops.
* Plan, set up, and lead activities at residences, including music, arts & crafts, cooking, and social events.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to build respectful, caring, and empowering relationships with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
* Assist with activities of daily living, including household tasks, self-care, hygiene, shopping, budgeting, and social skills.
* Capability to assist or lift individuals with physical disabilities or limited mobility.
* Age between 18-24 years.
* Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Additional Notes:
Schedule: Positions may be on first or second shift with designated days off.
Pay: The current rate is $22.09/hour, paid bi-weekly via direct deposit.
