Emergency Medicine Specialty Doctors at University Hospitals Dorset
We are seeking Specialty Doctors in Emergency Medicine to join the team at University Hospitals Dorset, based at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, near the beaches of Bournemouth and Poole.
The Emergency Medicine team has extensive experience supporting doctors through the CESR programme, many of whom now serve as substantive consultants. The programme includes bespoke professional development plans, placements in Critical Care, Anaesthetics, Acute Medicine, and Paediatrics, with mentorship from consultants who have previously attained CESR. Participation in this programme is optional for successful candidates.
Following the merger of Poole, Bournemouth, and Christchurch Hospitals into UHD, the emergency services are evolving. Currently, Bournemouth and Poole each have Emergency Departments, with Bournemouth designated for PCI and stroke thrombolysis, and Poole as a Major Trauma Unit with inpatient paediatric services. These roles are set to change at the end of 2024, with Trauma Unit status moving to Bournemouth and the Emergency Department relocating to a new facility in the Beach Building, alongside Paediatrics, Critical Care, and Maternity.
The main responsibilities include providing high-quality emergency care, managing a range of emergency medical conditions and injuries, and working scheduled shifts for routine assessment and treatment in the Emergency Department. The role involves participating in a 24/7 middle-tier rota and engaging in professional development and audit activities to meet clinical governance standards.
The successful candidate will join the existing team at Royal Bournemouth Hospital, supporting the Middle Grade tier, and will be committed to Emergency Medicine in a fast-paced environment. You will be supported by a team of 15 Consultants.
We reserve the right to close this vacancy early if a high volume of applications is received. UHD values underpin all we do, guiding how we treat patients, visitors, and colleagues. As part of ongoing service development following the merger and the New Hospital Programme, some services may move sites temporarily or long-term. Interviewers will be happy to answer any questions regarding potential site changes.
This vacancy closes on Monday 4 August 2025.
