Within Studio 59’s Creative & Production function, strengthened design leadership plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, consistent and platform-appropriate creative at scale. The Head of Design is central to ensuring The National Lottery’s visual identity is expressed clearly, consistently and creatively across all touchpoints. A bit about the role The Head of Design is responsible for leading design excellence across Studio 59, owning a single, authoritative source of truth for our design system and content usage for The National Lottery brand and our portfolio of games across campaigns, content and experiences. This role ensures brand strategy and creative ideas are translated into high-quality, coherent, consistent design output across all channels and formats. Implementing design best practices to enable rapid efficient scaling of content. Working closely with the Brand Director, Creative Director, Head of Delivery and Production teams, the Head of Design sets design standards, evolves design systems and upweights design capability to meet increased volume and pace. What you’ll be doing Design Leadership & Craft Excellence Lead and champion design excellence across Studio 59 Own the visual expression of The National Lottery brand across campaigns, content and assets Ensure consistently high standards of design craft across all outputs and formats Brand & Design Systems Architect and maintain a "Living Design System" that bridges the gap between digital products, physical retail environments, high-level brand campaigns and always on social activations, ensuring a unified customer journey across all touchpoints. Oversee the creation of atomic, modular design libraries that empower the wider team to assemble high-fidelity layouts for all channels rapidly while maintaining strict adherence to brand DNA. Develop, evolve and govern design systems, toolkits and templates to support scale and consistency Ensure design output aligns with brand strategy, frameworks and guardrails Provide clear design direction that enables speed without compromising quality Cross Functional Collaboration Work closely with the Brand Director and Creative Director to translate brand strategy and creative concepts into effective design Partner with the Head of Delivery to refine the "brief-to-delivery" pipeline by implementing standardised design hand-off steps that minimize friction between teams. Ensure design workflows integrate smoothly into end-to-end delivery Collaborate with Production and Media teams to ensure design is platform-ready and fit for purpose Capability & Team Development Lead, develop and inspire the Design Team, including newly introduced and repurposed roles Upweight design capability to support increased content volume, channel diversity and pace Set clear expectations, objectives and development plans for designers Process, Ways of Working Embed efficient, scalable design processes that support both planned and reactive delivery Contribute to continuous improvement of creative and production workflows Support the adoption of new tools and ways of working that enhance speed and quality Strong understanding of how to integrate generative AI, AI-assisted design tools and data-driven insights into a creative workflow. Experience leading design teams through AI-enabled processes, ensuring brand consistency, compliance and creative excellence. Quality Control & Governance Act as final design authority for key outputs, ensuring consistency and a continual focus on driving standards and quality forward Ensure design activity adheres to governance standards, accessibility guidelines and regulatory requirements Maintain clarity of decision-making and accountability within the design function What experience we’re looking for Senior experience leading design teams within an agency or in-house environment Strong background in brand-led design across multiple products, channels and platforms Experience developing and governing design systems at scale Excellent understanding of digital, social, retail and campaign design requirements Proven experience managing and developing design talent Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills Experience working within regulated or governed environments is desirable Key Measures of Success: To be successful in this role, you will: Deliver consistently high-quality design output across all channels and formats Strengthen consistency and clarity of The National Lottery’s visual identity Enable faster, more efficient creative delivery through strong design systems Build a high-performing, motivated design team with strong craft standards Be recognised as the design authority within Studio 59 About us At Allwyn, we are dedicated to changing lives and growing the National Lottery responsibly, championing its positive impact on people, places, and the planet.
