Applications are invited for an enthusiastic Optometrist to join our dynamic team of 10 Ophthalmic technicians, 7 Orthoptists and an Optometrist. The Orthoptic department works closely with the Eye Department which currently has 11 Consultants including specialist in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility.


Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for assessing patients referred to the Ophthalmology department who require contact lenses. Liaising as necessary with the Consultant Ophthalmologist when prescribing appropriate contact lenses. You will also assist with administrative and clerical tasks relating to provision of Optometry services.


Qualifications

* Degree in Optometry
* General Optical Council registration
* Further post‑graduate optometry qualification relating to a highly specialist aspect of clinical optometry


Knowledge and Training

* Evidence of highly specialist knowledge of the pathology, management and treatment of a wide range of Ophthalmology conditions, specifically corneal conditions
* Evidence of extensive relevant post graduate training and education and/or equivalent specialist experience
* Familiarity with the patient administration system Medisight


Experience

* Previous experience in prescribing and fitting contact lenses
* Extensive experience of formal and informal teaching, coaching and supervision of a variety of health professionals and students
* Experience of working within the NHS


Communication & Relationship Skills

* Good communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to communicate effectively. Using sensitivity with patients and carers, including those with learning and communication difficulties
* Advanced counselling skills to deal with complex, sensitive, contentious, unpleasant, or distressing issues
* Ability to remain focused despite interruptions from other staff, patients, and phone calls and maintain concentration for prolonged periods of time during assessments.
* Ability to work singlehanded and as part of a team
* Assist other members of the team to manage their case load as and when necessary.
* Able to work autonomously, and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
* In‑depth experience of working with the MDT (Multi‑Disciplinary Team) and ability to work across professional and organisational boundaries


Analytical & Judgement Skills

* Evidence of continued CPD (CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT) to include evidence of completing audit and presentations and an interest in research
* Committed to delivering high quality service and developing clinical practice based on reflection and evidence‑based practice
* Computer literate to enable inputting of data, analyse and present information


Planning & Organisational Skills

* Demonstrate clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of patients, both paediatric and adult, and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and time available.
* Willing to work hours required to carry out job satisfactorily and support the team
* Professional, punctual, reliable, flexible and self‑motivated in approach to duties
* Interest in Trust, local and NHS structure, targets and improvements
* Innovative in patient care and service delivery, evidence of initiating service improvements
