Job Overview Applicants are invited to join the enthusiastic and dedicated team in acute neonatal medicine and paediatrics at Glan Clwyd District General Hospital in North Wales. This is a 12-session post (equivalent to 48 hours/week) and the successful candidate will be expected to provide middle-grade support for both inpatient and outpatient services. Duties will include assessment and management of children referred acutely via the emergency department or their general practitioner and babies admitted to the neonatal unit. Further responsibilities will be in providing supervision and support to less experienced, first on-call tier trainees and non-training doctors. Day-to-day ward cover for the paediatric and neonatal inpatient services will also form part of the working week. This post is part of a 1:8 middle-grade rota (which may be subject to change and could increase to a 1:9 or 1:10 rota in the future). Main duties of the job The appointee will be based at Glan Clwyd Hospital and will provide middle-grade support for in-patient and outpatient services. Duties will include assessment and management of children referred acutely via the emergency department or their general practitioner as well as providing supervision and support to less experienced, first on-call tier trainees and non-training doctors. Day-to-day ward cover for the paediatric and neonatal inpatient services will also form part of the working week. The post-holder will participate in our 1:8 middle-grade rota. There will be opportunity and support to become involved in service-improvement projects such as clinical audit and guideline development and the post-holder will gain valuable insight and experience in the strategic and team-management aspects of running a service in a district general hospital. The paediatric fellow will be actively involved in our in-house teaching programs for trainees in the foundation program, general practice and paediatrics and there will be opportunities to extend a teaching repertoire to include nurses and other professionals. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practice MBBS or equivalent MRCPCH / DCH (or equivalent) APLS and NLS Level 3 Child protection Desirable criteria Relevant higher degree, diploma or other post graduate qualification. Experience Essential criteria Broad clinical experience in General Paediatrics Post holder to have completed at least four years’ fulltime postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis), Minimum 2 years’ experience working in paediatrics At least 6 months’ experience of Neonatal Intensive Care Competencies to work on a Tier 2 (middle grade) rota with 6 month’s experiences Desirable criteria Experience in a level 2 or 3 neonatal unit at Middle grade/registrar level Previous clinical experience of Child Protection Cases Special interest in any subspecialities. Ability Essential Criteria Demonstrate ability to manage acute paediatric and neonatal emergencies Ability to run outpatient clinics Ability to organise and prioritise workload, being aware and responsible for own limitations Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes Safe and effective communication skills, within clinical and non-clinical setting Communicate with patients/carers with tact and sensitivity Willingness to involve patients/carers in their management plans Basic IT skills Desirable criteria Advanced IT Skills including knowledge of web site authoring Experience of hospital pathology/radiology information systems Management Essential Criteria A willingness to attend and actively participate in the departmental management meetings. Desirable criteria A clear understanding of NHS management structures, policies and practices and their application, including clinical governance, resource allocation and service delivery processes Audit and Research Essential Criteria Evidence of participation in clinical audits with presentations at departmental/hospital audit meetings. Desirable criteria Evidence of completed audit projects Critical appraisal course / skills Evidence of research involvement including publications in peer reviewed journals (eg prizes or scholarships) Teaching Essential Criteria Evidence of a commitment to support the teaching of medical and non-medical staff. Demonstrates experience of teaching medical and other staff. Desirable criteria Evidence of formal teaching training Training Essential Criteria Evidence of commitment to Life Long Learning and Continued Professional Development; expanding practice and skills to keep up to date with new developments.
