Job Title: Care Home Maintenance Operative

Location: Haighfield Care Home, Wigan, with travel to other sites as needed

Salary: £12.50 per hour (negotiable depending on experience)

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-time (40 hours/week)

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5pm (with flexibility for occasional out-of-hours support)

Reports To: Maintenance Manager (Rod) and Management Team

Start Date: ASAP

Probation: 6 months

Haighfield Care Home,established in 1990 and located in Wigan with views over the scenic Douglas Valley, is a family-run home guided by the principle of "Care with Dignity." We provide nursing, residential, and respite care in a warm, supportive environment. Our experienced team is committed to delivering personalised care that respects the individual needs of each resident, making sure they feel comfortable, valued, and well looked after every day.

Role Summary

As a Maintenance Operative, you will play a key role in the smooth operation of the care home, ensuring the physical environment is safe, well-maintained, and compliant with all regulatory standards. You will be responsible for a range of maintenance tasks and proactive upkeep, while also fostering positive relationships with residents, staff, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

* Build and maintain positive relationships with residents and team members, responding promptly and respectfully to maintenance-related concerns.
* Carry out a wide range of routine maintenance tasks across the home, including:
* Basic joinery and carpentry repairs
* Lock and door hardware maintenance
* Minor plumbing and electrical work
* Painting, decorating, and general touch-ups
* Flooring repairs and replacements
* Servicing general equipment and systems
* External building maintenance (gutter cleaning, minor roof repairs)
* Lead by example when coordinating contractors and tasks efficiently.
* Maintain and prioritise a shared "to-do" list of property maintenance tasks.
* Monitor and perform health and safety checks, including:
* Fire drills and fire alarm tests
* Emergency lighting inspections
* Water temperature and Legionella checks
* Bed, mattress, and equipment inspections
* Call nurse point
* Ensure timely completion and accurate recording of all safety and regulatory checks.
* Work flexibly to assist with moving furniture and improving space usage.
* Be available for emergency call-outs, paid at time-and-a-half (mileage reimbursed at 45p/mile).
* Use cost-effective maintenance solutions to help reduce costs and minimise vacancy turnaround times.
* Maintain a proactive, structured approach to preventative maintenance.
* Work occasionally at secondary sites: Beeches Care Home (Coppel), Willows Care Home (Chester), and M&A Management (Wigan) (mileage reimbursed at 45p/mile).

What We're Looking For

* Proven maintenance experience (within a care environment or similar is essential)
* Basic skills in plumbing, joinery, electrics, and general building upkeep
* Proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* A flexible and reliable approach to working hours and emergency call-outs
* Understanding of and commitment to health and safety and safeguarding
* Must have a full driving licence and access to a reliable vehicle

Additional Information

* Uniform: Company polo/sweatshirt provided; own work trousers and safety footwear required.
* Holiday: 5.6 weeks per year (pro-rata), inclusive of bank holidays. Time off between Christmas and New Year is restricted.
* Transport & Parking: Mileage reimbursed for approved travel. Free staff parking is available at all care homes and head office.
* Communication: Use of WhatsApp is essential for team coordination.
* DBS Check: An Enhanced DBS check is required.
* Probation: 6 months, with performance reviews after 3 and 6 months.
