Description
Are you ready to take the lead on critical power infrastructure design? Want to develop your expertise further within a dynamic and growing business? We’re looking for a Lead Electrical Design Engineer ready to shape the future of DNO substation projects across the UK.
As a senior member of the electrical engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the electrical design elements of large‑scale projects within a regulated Distribution Network Operator (DNO) framework. Working closely with a Design Manager who oversees all design disciplines, you’ll ensure the timely delivery of feasibility and detailed HV electrical designs, managing sub‑consultants and collaborating directly with the DNO’s internal design teams.
Your projects will span 11kV to 132kV systems, involving substation new builds, refurbishments and reinforcements, with assets such as GIS/AIS switchgear, transformers, underground cables and overhead line terminations.
Key Responsibilities
* Design Leadership - Production and review of HV electrical designs from feasibility to detail level, in line with DNO and industry standards.
* Team Coordination - Manage the output and quality of external sub‑consultants delivering electrical designs.
* Stakeholder Collaboration - Engage with the DNO design authority to secure design approval.
* Cross-disciplinary Integration - Work closely with cable system designers and civil engineers to ensure holistic project delivery.
* Technical Compliance - Apply a strong understanding of electrical theory, protection, earthing, and system studies to ensure robust and compliant designs.
* Safety & Standards - Champion safety-by-design and ensure all work aligns with statutory regulations and internal safety procedures.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
* Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
* Chartered Engineer status or actively working towards chartership.
* Proven experience in HV electrical design, ideally within a DNO or ICP environment.
* Deep understanding of high‑voltage plant, protection systems, and applicable standards.
* Strong grasp of electrical safety regulations for HV environments.
Skills
* Communicate clearly and confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment and lead by example.
* Have a proactive mindset and strong problem‑solving skills.
* Can balance technical leadership with pragmatic project delivery.
