Teaching Assistant (Autism Base – Secondary School, Barry)
Location: Barry, Vale of Glamorgan
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:10am – 3:15pm
Pay: £90 per day (due to increase April 2026)
Contract: Term time only
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Teaching Assistant to join an Autism Base within a welcoming secondary school in Barry. The successful candidate will work one-to-one with a pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), anxiety, and emotional needs, providing both academic and emotional support throughout the school day.
You will play a key role in helping the pupil engage with their learning, attend lessons, and regulate their emotions in a calm, structured environment. This is a rewarding position for someone passionate about supporting young people with additional needs and helping them reach their full potential.
Responsibilities:
* Support a pupil on a one-to-one basis within the Autism Base and mainstream classes.
* Assist the pupil in completing classwork and maintaining focus during lessons.
* Provide emotional and behavioural support, using calm and consistent strategies.
* Help the pupil regulate emotions and develop positive coping skills.
* Communicate effectively with base staff, mainstream teachers, and pastoral teams.
* Support transitions between lessons and activities.
* Contribute to a positive, inclusive learning environment.
* Participate in training and development during INSET days.
Person Specification:
* Experience working with children or young people with additional learning needs, particularly ASD and anxiety.
* Calm, patient, and empathetic approach.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to be proactive and use initiative to keep the pupil engaged and on task.
* Reliable and committed to supporting both the pupil and the wider team.
* Willingness to take part in ongoing training.
