OCU is looking for a Junior Quantity Surveyor to join the team based in Shetland.
As a Junior Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial and financial management of construction or infrastructure projects, working under the guidance of senior QS staff. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that project costs are managed effectively—from initial estimates through to final accounts—while supporting procurement, contract administration, and reporting.
This role is ideal for someone early in their career and offers the opportunity to build experience across cost planning, contractor engagement, site valuations, and financial controls on real-world projects across sectors like civil engineering, water, energy, or housing.
You will need to be able to:
* Assist in the preparation of cost estimates, budgets, and tender documents.
* Support procurement processes, including issuing enquiries and analysing quotations.
* Help manage subcontractor accounts, variations, and valuations.
* Measure quantities and assist in preparing interim and final valuations.
* Assist with the preparation of monthly cost reports and cash flow forecasts.
* Help maintain project cost control, identifying risks and opportunities.
* Attend site meetings and assist with recording project progress.
* Work closely with senior QS staff, site managers, and project teams to ensure accurate cost reporting and compliance with contracts.
What You Will Need To Be Successful
* HNC, HND, or degree (or working towards) in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
* Basic understanding of construction processes and the role of quantity surveying.
* Strong numeracy, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Good communication and interpersonal abilities.
* Competent in MS Excel and commercial software (e.g., COINS, Causeway, or similar) is a plus.
* Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and develop.
* Full UK driving licence (desirable for site-based roles).
