Clinical Coding Auditor
Join the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Clinical Coding Team as an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditor. You will conduct high‑quality audits across a wide range of specialties, from obstetrics and neonates to spinal, neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and major trauma.
Responsibilities
* Support the delivery of the NCA’s internal clinical coding audit programme, completing a varied portfolio of audits and assurance activities in line with NHS England’s Clinical Coding Audit Methodology.
* Review coded activity across multiple specialties, identify variances, analyse root causes and produce clear, evidence‑based reports that support high‑quality, standards‑compliant coding.
* Translate audit findings into actionable insights, support practical improvement plans, and champion continuous quality improvement across the organisation.
* Contribute to mortality review audits, including those linked to indicators such as HSMR and SHMI, ensuring coded data is robust and reliable.
* Engage with clinical coders, operational managers and clinical teams to promote strong documentation standards and improve understanding of national coding rules.
* Maintain NHS England Approved Auditor status, keep coding knowledge current, and support audit delivery across multiple NCA sites as required.
Qualifications
* NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Auditor
* Accredited Clinical Coder status (ACC)
* Clinical Coding Refresher Course within the last 3 years
* Clinical Coding Audit experience
* Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word (or equivalent)
* Experience engaging with staff at all levels – clinical and non‑clinical
* Desirable: Registration with a health informatics professional body (e.g. IHRIM, FEDIP, AphA)
* Desirable: Experience conducting mortality reviews and understanding HSMR and other mortality indicators
* Desirable: Experience with data‑analytics tools, benchmarking and SQL skills
