Overview
Are you passionate about the decarbonisation of industry and energy sectors? As industrial sectors plan their transition to Net Zero, new substitutes for fossil fuels are emerging, particularly where hydrogen or electrification are not viable. In a 12‑month fixed‑term appointment, we are seeking a Senior Advisor to lead our work in preparing to regulate the production and use of low‑carbon fuels (LCFs).
LCF production and combustion can differ significantly from traditional fossil fuel processes, bringing new environmental risks and regulatory challenges. We need to gather evidence, develop standards, write guidance and build regulatory tools to ensure these technologies can be deployed safely and effectively. Your work will help ensure the energy sector continues to operate in a way that protects people and the environment from harmful emissions, while supporting mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
What You’ll Do
* Provide specialist advice on LCF production, combustion and environmental impacts.
* Develop regulatory standards, guidance and tools for new fuel technologies.
* Support permitting teams on complex cases involving ammonia, SAF, hydrogen and other alternative fuels.
* Work with DfT, DESNZ, Defra and others through briefings, working groups and cross‑government collaboration.
* Build partnerships with universities, research organisations and industry bodies.
* Represent the Environment Agency in national forums on LCF and decarbonisation.
You’ll Bring
* Strong technical expertise in LCFs, energy systems or environmental regulation.
* Ability to translate complex science and engineering into clear regulatory advice.
* Confidence engaging with industry, government and academic stakeholders.
* A strategic, solution‑focused mindset for long‑term challenges.
* Motivation to deliver positive environmental outcomes and support the UK’s net‑zero transition.
You will have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. We’ll support you in finding an incident role to suit your needs and circumstances and provide appropriate training.
Some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Experience & Skills Required
* Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge and experience in the work area for the role, including knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government and academia.
