Thepost is a fixed term contract for period of 6 months
Weare seeking a dynamic Locum Consultant to join the Leeds Allergy &Immunology Specialist services at St James University Hospital. The appointeewill become a key member of a dedicated and highly experiencedmulti-disciplinary team. The job is part time fixed term locum compromising of10 programmed activities fixed term locum post, with supervision of the juniordoctors and specialist nurses. There will be an on-call commitment of 1:4.Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teachinghospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds and providing a range of general,acute and elective services, together with a significant number of regional andsupra-regional specialties. Thedepartment has recently gained QPIDS re-accreditation. We are committed toproviding high quality specialist care to patients suffering from allergic,immunodeficiency and autoinflammatory disorders. Great emphasis has been placedon delivering a friendly, consultant led, patient centric service. Ourmultidisciplinary teams are a key part of our success and include anaesthetics,clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, physician associate and researchers.There is a dedicated outpatient and Day- Case facility.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant should possessMembership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (orequivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a trainingprogramme within the UK. In accordancewith the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctorsmust be on the Specialist Register. Applicants should have established skillsin Allergy & Immunology & diagnostic laboratory. Job responsibilities
Thisis a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Allergy and Immunology.
Thepost will join Dr Sinisa Savic, Dr Anoop Mistry and Dr Claire Stockdale toprovide specialist services for the West, North & large parts of EastYorkshire. Altogether the service serves a population of just over 3 millionpeople. We also provide a supra regional service for patients with systemicautoinflammatory disorders. The service is divided into three key areas;primary immunodeficiency, allergy and autoinflammatory disorders.
Theappointee will work at St Jamess University Teaching Hospital, where therewill be outpatient responsibilities. There is a commitment to Immunology oncall on a 1:4.
Theunit provides a specialised service to hospitals and GPs for the diagnosis andmanagement of a range of rare primary immunodeficiencies including antibody,complement, phagocyte and cellular deficiencies. In addition, the unit is responsible forongoing management of over one hundred adults with primary antibody deficiencyas well as being a recognised home therapy centre. The immunodeficiency unit was accredited witha previous scheme run by the UK Primary Immunodeficiency Network. We arecurrently in process of reaccrediting the service with QPIDS accreditationscheme run by the Royal College of Physicians.
AllergyServices:
Theunit provide medical care for a large number of patients with various types ofallergic diseases. This includes management of patients with food, venom, drugand aeroallergies. The service provides allergen specific immunotherapy forsevere seasonal allergic rhinitis (subcutaneous or sublingual route) and otheraeroallergens (house dust mite and animal dander). We also offer allergenimmunotherapy for bee and wasp venom.There are monthly multidisciplinary clinics for anaesthetic drugallergy. The unit also manages the largest cohort of patients in the UKreceiving omalizumab for chronic spontaneous urticaria. The allergy servicecontinues to experience high demand, with 20% annual increase in activity.
Systemicautoinflammatory disorders:
Theunit provides a supra regional service for patients with systemicautoinflammatory disorders. The unit is responsible for management of patientswith genetically defined conditions such as TRAPS, FMF and MVK deficiency butthere is also have a large cohort of patients with AOSD and other geneticallyundefined systemic autoinflammatory disorders.The service is supported by a genetics laboratory which provides routinetesting using specifically designed genes panel. The day case unit provide facilities foradministration of biological therapies such as infliximab, anakinra andtocilizuamb.
Paediatricand transitional care
Inaddition to these responsibilities, both consultants provide paediatricimmunology support to childrens services at the General Infirmary. Paediatricimmunodeficiency clinics are delivered on a monthly basis whilst paediatricautoinflammatory clinics run once every 3 months. There are currently plans toextend the input into paediatric services to help to deliver transitionalclinics for paediatric allergy patients.
Theconsultant posts provide significant input into the diagnostic immunologylaboratory.
LaboratoryServices:
Theexisting consultant posts provide significant input into the diagnosticimmunology laboratory.
Diagnosticimmunology services are provided to West Yorkshire and beyond. The diagnosticimmunology laboratory is one of the largest in the UK. In 2010 nearly 300,000 tests were performed. At present the laboratory service is headedby one of the medical consultants who has 4 programmed activities in thelaboratory.
Thediagnostic laboratory provides consultant support to a number of hospitalsaround the Yorkshire region (York, Harrogate, Mid-Yorkshire hospitals,Huddersfield). As part of the job plan for this post, support to theselaboratories will be addressed flexibly to meet the demands of theservice.
Researchactivity
Thereis very active translational research programme within the department. Inaddition to basic and translational research into primary immunodeficienciesand systemic autoinflammatory syndromes, the unit is participating in severalclinical studies.
Person Specification
Experience
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in managing patients with primary & secondary immunodeficiences, drug allergy & chronic spontaneous urticaria
* Must be able to demonstrate higher training in Immunology
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics
* Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice
* Eligibility to work in the UK
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
Qualifications
* Certificate of completion of Specialist training in Immunology FRCPath or equivalent
* The appointee must hold the Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom, or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice
