Applications are invited for a full-time post of Senior Clinical Fellow with Research in Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery for 12 months. The post is based at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage and is designed to provide a platform for a registrar level surgeon to advance their clinical knowledge and skills.
The successful applicant will be actively involved in the clinical and managerial aspects of our ENT department. Our ENT department performs regularly advanced ear operations (including bone conduction and middle ear implant work), advanced rhinology procedures, transoral robotic surgery, trans- nasal oesophagoscopy, and has the largest cohort of thyroid/parathyroid patients in Hertfordshire/ Bedfordshire. There are subspecialty clinics taking place daily (e.g hearing and balance, facial palsy, smell, thyroid/parathyroid, head and neck, paediatric) and different MDTs that the fellow will be expected to attend.
There will be a defined management and teaching responsibility and the potential for collaborative research projects to be developed. Experience in ENT at SHO level is essential. The post-holder will be supervised in operating lists and clinics and will be part of the out of hours on-call rota. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Clinical Director of ENT, Ms Joanna Stephens.
Main duties of the job
Clinically, this is an excellent opportunity within the ENT unit at the Trust for the appointee to further their interest and surgical knowledge and skills. The ENT department performs regularly advanced ear operations (including bone conduction and middle ear implant work), advanced rhinology procedures (and use of Navigation), transoral robotic surgery, trans-nasal oesophagoscopy, and has the largest cohort of thyroid/parathyroid patients in Hertfordshire/ Bedfordshire. There are subspecialty clinics taking place daily (e.g hearing and balance, smell, thyroid and parathyroid, head and neck, paediatric) and different MDTs that the fellow will be expected to attend. The post-holder will be supervised in operating lists and clinics.The post holder will be part of an on-call rota (1 in 8 hot weeks, no out of hours on call committment).
Research
The post-holder will have dedicated research time and will be expected to contribute to existing departmental projects, as well as initiate new projects aimed at achieving publications, national presentations, and attracting funding for the department and the Trust.

Person specification
Qualifications/Training
Essential criteria
* Hold a current licence to practice from the General Medical Council
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCS (ENT) equivalent
* Advanced Life Support Certificate or equivalent
Previous Experience
Essential criteria
* Completion of at least 12 months hospital service as SHO or higher grade, AND At least 6 months experience in ENT
* Recognition of and ability to undertake the initial management of an acutely ill patient
* Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
* Demonstrable interest in and comprehension of ENT including managing a range of emergency and elective presentations
Skills
Essential criteria
* Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and the identification of errors and the learning from errors
* Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making
* Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice
* Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues
* Ability to teach clinical skills
* Experience in organising educational activities
