Full job description
Location: Based at our office in Southampton, Hampshire with regular travel to events across the UK as required
Salary From: £30,000 per year (dependant on experience)
Contract: 4x Days, 40 hours per week (Wednesday to Saturday) with a time off in lieu system.
Wessex Sound Hire is a complete event production company based in Southampton, supplying sound, lighting, AV and staging equipment to events across the South Coast and beyond — from live music and tribute shows to corporate events and festivals. With a passionate, experienced team, we pride ourselves on providing creative technical solutions and exceptional service across every stage of an event.
We’re looking for a proactive and hands-on Production Technician to join our team. This role is for a resourceful problem solver who’s equally comfortable in front of clients as they are behind the kit. In this role, you’ll help win projects, create proposals, and then be right there on-site — setting up, operating, and managing AV, sound, and lighting alongside our team.
Every day is different: one day you’re quoting a dry hire, the next you’re running a conference, show, or an outdoor event. No two days are the same, and every day you’ll be making an impact.
What you’ll be doing
* Client-facing – act as the face of the company, building strong relationships with clients, understanding their needs, and ensuring they receive excellent service.
* On-site implementation – Assist in leading a small team of freelance technicians, liaise with venues and suppliers, and ensure events run smoothly to the highest professional standard. Operate sound (particularly monitors) for live tribute acts and 7-piece bands.
* Technical input – use your knowledge of lighting, sound, and AV equipment to design solutions, oversee technical setups, and get hands-on with the technology.
* Winning work – respond to enquiries, create accurate and engaging proposals, and follow up on leads to secure dry hire and event projects.
* Warehouse: Prep, test and pack sound, lighting and AV equipment ready for events & shows. Load and drive company vans to deliver and collect equipment. Keep the warehouse tidy and organised, ensuring kit is maintained to a high standard.
What we’re looking for
* A confident communicator who enjoys working directly with clients.
* Strong technical knowledge in sound, lighting, and AV.
* The skillset to regularly operate shows as part of event delivery, using your technical expertise to ensure high-quality outcomes.
* Experience managing small teams onsite, with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
* Someone who is organised and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects at once.
* A candidate with commercial awareness, with an eye for balancing great delivery and profitability.
* A flexible and proactive team player — equally happy preparing proposals in the office or delivering events in the field.
* A full UK driving licence is essential.
* Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, and as needed, stay away from home, reflecting the demands and variety of the events industry.
Why join us?
At our heart, we’re a friendly, supportive, and professional team. We pride ourselves on delivering great experiences for our clients and making events happen at the highest standard. Joining us means:
* Variety in your day-to-day work — no two projects are the same.
* The chance to combine sales, client interaction, and hands-on delivery.
* Opportunities to develop your technical and project management skills.
* Being part of a growing company where your contribution will make a real impact.
* Benefits include time off in lieu, training and development, pension scheme, team socials.
The position is a full-time role, working 40 hours per week over 4 days - Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday. The role requires staying away from home on average 2-3 nights per week.
If you’re passionate about events, thrive in a client-facing role, and love being hands-on, this could be the perfect next step for you.
