Role: Consultant Psychiatrist – Older Age Psychiatry

Contract: Fixed term, 12 months, full‑time
Responsibilities
Provide high‑quality mental health care for older adults with severe and enduring conditions, both inpatient and outpatient. Diagnose dementia early and support patients and families through the illness. Manage moderate to severe mental health problems including depression, bipolar disorder, delirium, and severe anxiety. Work closely with community teams to ensure safe, seamless transitions between hospital and community care. Deliver specialist care in community clinics, community buildings, and specialist wards.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
* MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
* Fully registered with the GMC and licence to practise at the time of appointment
* Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of appointment
* Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months
* Approved under S12 or able to achieve within three months
* Excellent knowledge in psychiatric specialty and broad medical knowledge
* Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
* Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
* Ability to make evidence‑based decisions and meet duties under MHA and MCA
* Able to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training
* Participated in continuous professional development and research or service evaluation
* Actively participated in clinical audit
Desirable:
* Higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
* MRCPsych or equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
* Additional clinical qualifications
* Wide range of specialist and subspecialist experience relevant to the post within NHS or comparable service
* Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation
* Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement (awards, publications, presentations)
* Led clinical audits that resulted in service change
Eligibility Requirements
* Approved by the GMC with no detrimental GMC warnings or conditions
Transport
Holds and will use a valid UK driving licence or provide evidence of alternative travel arrangements.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
Deliver teaching and training, participate in CPD, research, service evaluation, and clinical audit.
Employment Details
Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (pro rata)
Pay scheme: Hospital medical and dental staff
