Independent Governor
South Devon College's (SDC) governing body is collectively responsible for the strategic direction of the college. This includes monitoring effective and efficient use of finance and resources and acting as a critical friend to the senior leadership who lead the operational management.
The Governor Role
Governors enact the above responsibilities in several ways:
* Attending meetings that cover a wide variety of topics; strategy, educational quality, financial management, audit, assurance and risk - all with a view to supporting the strategic direction of the college.
* Acting as the critical friend: support the SLT with support and challenge.
* Taking on a lead role and holding a specific portfolio of interest or expertise to support college strategy.
* Visiting the college to triangulate information reported in meetings and to meet with the learners, staff and key stakeholders that make up the SDC community.
What do you need to be a governor at SDC?

* An ability to apply critical thinking, previous experience and knowledge to matters as they arise;
* An area of expertise that will contribute to the skill set of the board, such as finance management;
* To balance support and effective challenge, contributing to board discussions transparently and fairly;
* Commitment to attending meetings and engaging with governor visits outside of meetings.
