Job overview

Health and safety is central to staff and patient wellbeing across all Soft FM services. With over 1,800 staff operating in high-risk environments such as kitchens, cleaning, and security, the Trust requires increased capacity to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and protect its
workforce. This role forms part of the newly established Risk, Safety and Experience team, providing dedicated support to embed safe practices and a positive health and safety culture across Soft FM.

The post holder will work closely with site teams, managers, and subject matter experts to promote compliance with legislation, conduct proactive risk assessments, investigate incidents, and support staff to create a safe and supportive working environment.

This role reflects the Trust’s Accountable and Respectful values, ensuring that safety standards are consistently applied and that all staff feel valued and protected in their workplace.

Main duties of the job

Support the delivery of a safe working environment across Soft FM services by undertaking inspections, audits and risk assessments, identifying hazards and recommending corrective actions. Assist in the investigation of incidents and near misses, ensuring accurate reporting, root cause analysis and completion of follow-up actions in line with Trust procedures. Maintain accurate records and input data into systems such as Datix, producing reports as required.

Provide guidance to staff and managers on health and safety policies, procedures and safe systems of work, supporting compliance with statutory requirements including COSHH, manual handling, fire safety and PPE. Support training, inductions and briefings to ensure staff understand their responsibilities for maintaining a safe environment. Promote a proactive safety culture by encouraging reporting of hazards and unsafe practices.

Work collaboratively with operational teams, subject matter experts and Learning & Development colleagues to embed learning from incidents and drive continuous improvement. Support the development and delivery of safety improvement plans, monitor compliance, and contribute to governance reporting. Ensure safety documentation and communications are clear and compliant. Identify risks to service delivery through audits and analysis, proposing practical solutions to improve safety performance.

Maintain confidentiality at all times and undertake additional duties as required to support the Health & Safety Manager and wider team.
