We have an exciting opportunity for an Asset Engineer to join our Network Asset Management team, reporting to the Senior Asset Engineer (South).
In this role, you'll help monitor and review the performance of distribution gas assets to ensure the continued safe operation of network infrastructure across the Southern region. You'll work closely with a wide range of internal and external teams and will be responsible for managing assets across the North and West regions of our network, covering Dorset, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex, and the Isle of Wight.
This position involves regular travel to sites and office locations across the Southern Gas Networks area.
We deliver safety, warmth, and comfort to homes and businesses. Every role, whether in the office or on the front line, plays a key part in this mission. Here’s how you will contribute…
1. Reviewing asset condition data and applying engineering judgement to develop intervention plans.
2. Supporting and monitoring the delivery of work programmes for the current regulatory price control period and contributing to planning for future periods.
3. Understanding legal rights and obligations for pipelines and sites, including managing third-party encroachments or unauthorised activity on SGN land and easements. This may involve supporting legal teams with enforcement or recovery actions.
4. Supporting the development and implementation of engineering policies and procedures.
5. Preparing engineering project scopes and coordinating project delivery in conjunction with other SGN teams.
6. Liaising with operational colleagues to ensure maintenance and construction activities are completed and accurately recorded.
7. Engaging with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
8. Managing systems related to asset management and regularly reporting on key engineering metrics and system performance.
What you will need
This role would suit candidates with experience in Asset Management or Operational and Maintenance roles who are ready to progress their careers.
You’ll be a motivated, flexible individual with strong organisational, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills. Excellent communication is essential, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
We're looking for someone who:
9. Demonstrates strong computer literacy and analytical skills.
10. Shares and embodies SGN’s values, supporting our safety culture and performance targets
11. Is committed to continuous professional development.
Qualifications and Experience:
12. Ideally, you’ll hold an engineering degree. However, equivalent experience and demonstrable skills will be considered.
13. Professional registration (CEng or IEng) is advantageous, but candidates committed to achieving this are encouraged to apply.
14. A full UK driving licence is essential, along with a willingness to travel periodically.
15. Essential Technical Skills and Experience:
16. A good understanding of SGN’s policies, management procedures, and the Safety Management Framework.
17. Knowledge of the gas transmission and distribution systems, and their interdependencies.
18. Familiarity with IGEM standards and relevant legislation.
19. Broad knowledge of the UK gas industry.
Not sure you meet every requirement?
Research shows some people – particularly women and those from underrepresented backgrounds – may hesitate to apply unless they meet every criteria. At SGN, we value diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
If this role interests you but you’re not sure you tick every box, we’d still love to hear from you. You might be just who we’re looking for – now or in the future.
Why SGN?
