JOB DESCRIPTION SEND (Special Education Needs and Disabilities) Support practitioner The role of Special Educational Needs and Disability support practitioner/assistant is to work under the guidance of SEND and teaching staff. To undertake support programs and plans that enable access to learning and development for all children with SEND or learning disabilities. REPORTS TO Management team/ Area SENDco Position Responsibility To ensure the safety and wellbeing of the SEND child in your care. Plan and deliver activities and support the child with emotional regulation, routines, transitions and behaviour management. Liaise and work in partnership with parents/carers, nursery staff, outside agencies and SENDco to strive for the best outcomes for the child. Key requirements • Excellent verbal communication skills • Knowledge of SEND • Patient, understanding and able to remain calm in difficult situations. • Ability to adapt and change routines etc due to the needs of the child. • Always ensure safe practice. • Ability to look after child’s physical, social and emotional well-being. Description of Duties • Work in partnership with the nursery SENDco, Child’s parents, and nursery to strive for the best outcomes. • Provide a structure to the day with the ability to change, to be flexible, and adapt to the child’s needs. • Practitioner to be aware of the child’s individual needs by assessing, planning for and reviewing the child’s developmental needs. • Create interesting learning opportunities, environment and activities, using the child’s likes and interests. • Keep records and attend review meetings. • Work alongside other professionals such as Speech and language therapists. • Follow SEND support plans, EHCP’s or any other relevant documentation. • Work alongside key person to observe, carry out activities and record. • Use knowledge, learning interventions and strategies. • Continually monitor child’s development. • Support with child’s behaviour and self-regulation. • Ensure safety risk assessment is in place and followed by all staff. • Inform SENDco and Management of any potential risks and take actions to prevent harm to the child. • Assist and support transitions. • Prepare learning materials and activities. • Attend training and staff meetings where required to enhance and extend knowledge and understanding. • Record accidents or incidents in the relevant way and share information with parents/carers. • Ensure safeguarding of all children within the setting, following nursery policy and procedures. • Respect the confidentiality of information received as stated in the company confidentiality policy. • Always ensure cleanliness of children, washing and changing as required. • Provide comfort and warmth to an unwell child • Helping children to rest/sleep as required This list is not exhaustive and further duties and expectations to meet the needs of the child and setting may be added.
