Purpose of the Role
To lead, manage and deliver construction works on DLR/light rail infrastructure projects to high standards of safety, quality, programme, and cost. Ensure full compliance with DLR/TfL standards and other relevant rail safety regulations, while coordinating site teams, subcontractors, and stakeholders to successful project completion.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee all site construction activities for DLR/light rail infrastructure (e.g. track, platforms, civil works, stations) ensuring works comply with DLR / TfL standards.
Plan, programme and manage resources, labour, subcontractors, plant, materials; ensuring design interface, logistics, and access constraints are understood and managed.
Monitor and control project costs: prepare estimates, manage budgets, handle variations, and ensure procurement is efficient.
Ensure health, safety, and environmental regulations and standards are met on site - including CDM, rail safety, method statements, risk assessments.
Uphold quality control and assurance: conduct inspections, testing, snagging and ensure technical specifications are adhered to.
Manage stakeholder relations: liaise with clients, DLR / TfL authorities, utility providers, consultants, and local authorities.
Produce regular reporting on progress, risks, safety, cost, quality and programme to senior management.
Lead, motivate and manage the construction/site teams and subcontractors; ensure effective communication and coordination.
Ensure successful handover of works: manage close-out, as-built documentation, snag lists, and meet contractual obligations.
Required Skills & Experience
Significant experience as a Construction Manager (or similar senior role) with DLR / light rail / urban rail projects.
Strong knowledge of DLR / TfL standards, processes, safety and compliance requirements.
Proven ability in budgeting, cost management, programme scheduling, and variation management.
Experience working in live rail environments or constrained urban settings, managing access, shutdowns, interfaces.
Excellent leadership & team management skills; experience coordinating subcontractors, site staff, and multi‑disciplinary teams.
Strong stakeholder management & communication skills.
Solid ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, designs.
Qualifications
Degree / HND / HNC in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Railway Engineering or similar.
Relevant health & safety & rail safety certifications (for example SMSTS, NEBOSH, PTS or applicable rail safety tickets).
Construction supervisory / managerial accreditations (CSCS, etc.)
Project Management qualifications desirable (e.g. Prince2, APM)
